The exterior of this place was hugely misleading - extremely run down, not a nice looking farmhouse by any means, looking like it would be completely empty, maybe frames left inside or odds and ends. We drove by it multiple times, thinking it wouldn't be special, until one day we finally stopped. Were we ever surprised to find this when we stepped inside...

Next, let's see an old board game in an abandonment.

Not necessarily old, but cool as hell. Unfortunately the critical space item was missing.

Wow that is really cool, any story behind the place you found it? Here's some high society.

how about some history? Documents, photos, etc. from when the location was operational.

Well, the building was built in the 1930's and originally used by the federal government to classify and evaluate imports for duties and taxes as they came into the port of Houston. However, as the port grew, the building could no longer house the expanding operations. In the late 1990's, the property was sold off by the federal government and bought by an individual who it appears enjoyed collecting. Antique cars, antique bikes, statues, dirt bikes, furniture, etc. At some point one of the rooms in the building was converted into the beginnings of a grow operation, complete with fertilizer, lights, and grow kits. There were no actual plants when I visited. That's as far as the history as I could come up with. Sadly we are on hiatus from revisiting to develop a greater history; a man paid to watch the property pulled a gun on a fellow explorer the day after I visited. One of the most interesting buildings I have ever been inside.

I don't think we stumbled upon an active grow operation. Even that appeared abandoned. Still scary.

Not much to this one, I'm afraid. Found it in an abandoned parking garage and couldn't resist the compulsion to take the picture. It was already posed and everything.

... How about something sentimental on paper (or just a medium), like a diary or scrapbook?

Wait, is this the one that had the DOJ sticker on the door and I was raving about the stairs from one of your photos? I didn't hear the part about someone else getting a gun pulled on them! Yikes.

The very same one. The scary part of exploring in Texas.

I suppose I should post a set about the place. It was pretty damn intriguing. I would love to go back and get more shots, but I have plenty to explore without having to worry about being shot.

Later finding the letter from the hospital outlining the death of the child this card was written for who died not long after his 6th birthday of acute leukaemia (in 1970) absolutely floored me. To this day it is the saddest thing I have ever found in an abandonment.

That's like half of Queen's U, the other half was designed by Bruce Kuwabara or is 200 years old.

I didn't know there was a name for it so I just called them all Stalinist (no fun/colour, only concrete for the proletariat.)

Yeah that's the name. We have tonnes of it in Brisbane, Australia because the city's economic boom was during the 1970's and 1980's thanks to the notorious at the then time, Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson. He knocked down lots of heritage listed buildings over night without any public consultation or approval which has resulted in people like me dashing about photographing every last piece of history this city has because believe it or not heritage listed buildings are still being torn down over night... it isn't as bad as it was during the 70's or 80's though.

Anyway lots of Brutalist buildings are usually government facilities, to ensure the public feels comfortable with a titanic grey block of concrete full of lawyers and policemen ...
