Ski jacket can put you out of the element really quickly. Get a Carhartt or something tough but inexpensive. They'll never do you wrong.

What do you mean put you out of the element?

Jeans, with long johns if it's under -15C
N2B Flight Jacket, nice and short (bomber style) jacket.
Combat boots
Wool "watch" hat
As for gloves I picked up these wonderful Pro Framer gloves, which exposes the thumb and the two closest fingers, which allows for easy manipulation of camera controls. plus they're not too bulky so that if it's really cold you have have larger gloves over top when you're outside and/or not using the camera.

Out of the element:

Being out of context, let's say someone with a utility jumpsuit in a yoga studio. They are out of their element.

How about spandex in a utility tunnel?

Provided they're both extreme cases, if you're careful about where you go it'll be fine, but it's a subtle detail.

I wear what I'd wear if I wasn't exploring. Army/camo pants usually but sometimes I'll wear a kilt. Lightweight hiking shoes if it's warm and not too industrial. Heavier boots if it's cold or if there's a lot of debris. Almost always a light Goretex-like windbreaker with the number of layers underneath depending on the weather. Hat and fingerless gloves/mitts when necessary.

So?

My North Face jacket says "I am some random college kid either fooling around, or shooting photos for a class/project/whatever."

Works for me.
