Historic Toronto building destroyed
Massive $2M blaze rips through family business
By JONATHAN JENKINS, Toronto Sun

A seven-alarm fire destroyed an historic building downtown this morning, turning three generations of one family’s memories into ashes. Damages are estimated at $2 million.

Ontario Paint and Wallpaper had been on Queen St. east of Sherbourne since 1913, burst into flame shortly after 2 a.m.

Firefighters were quickly on scene and managed to keep the flames from spreading to neighbouring shops. No one was seriously injured.

A total of 45 fire trucks and 180 firefighters in total were called out to the scene. Queen St., including its street car lines, was shut down this morning.

But despite the massive response, there was no chance to save the family business, consumed by flames that got into the basement.

It most certainly was not worthy of 7 alarms. I've seen 3 alarm fires bigger than this. George and Keith did manage to get some really good shots though! They should have followed me upstairs though... We were basically on top of the place, literally.

I saw the news.

Q1 - Was there several apartments above the business ?

Also ~ From what I could see of the building from the news, the structure did not seem to have anything notable in terms of architectural design.

Anywho - Did any of the honorable members drop by this business to 'pimp' their domicile?

No, there were no apartments above the first floor, they were part of the business. However to the building to the west had apartments on the 2nd floor. I can see why the needed to demolish the facade. It collapsed like matchsticks once the backhoe got to it.
