wow glad to hear that you're alright gretschdiva! Sucks that it happened, but it def couldve been worse.

I remember a few summers back I was helping an elderly neighbour install some siding on the 2nd floor of his house and the the 2" thick scaffolding beam snapped in half while we were both standing on it...just the 2 of us and some tools. The wood looked perfectly fine, and had been used for years without problem, but it snapped in the blink of an eye, sending us both falling 15ft on our backs. we were both uninjured (a fucking miracle considering the guy was in his late 70's and I landed half on top of him), but I know what u mean when you say wood can be unpredictable.
just another (fortunately minor) reminder of the dangers we face every time we explore someplace unfamiliar.

to reiterate... if you are new to this hobby, this isn't golf. this is what more else adds up to an adventurous form of archeology... you want to wear a stetson hat, leather jacket and bullwhip, well more power to you, but UNDERSTAND you will, at some point, get hurt doing this. There are ways to reduce the risks you take, but at the end of it, this is something outside and should always remain outside, regardless of media exposure, bickering here, or the well-intentioned agendas of good meaning folk.

i hesitate to call this an extreme activity because that tag has been added to everything from bagels to toilet paper, but understand, you're going into areas that are deteriorating, are uninspected and should be considered fucked.

Doesn't mean you can't have a good time... just use your melon.

I work in an elementary school. Our breakfast bagels do, in fact, claim to be "Xtreem Bagels," mispelling and all.

You had to be in one of the blending houses which are all in various stages of begin demolished. Honestly, I avoid going into those buildings when I noticed that one of them was held up by 2x4's nailed together in a beam fashion.

Are you talking about the blending towers, or different buildings? Because the blending towers (with the exception of the smaller ones on the rifle line) have concrete floors.

Tommy was talking about the Pulping Houses and the buildings near that. They are wood framed with wooden catwalks.

Every first time explorer I intend to take with me, first gets an e-mail that this is in fact a dangerous hobby where accidents can and will happen, and that they do that at their own risk.

Directions are underneath that message, so they have to read it.

That's the only form of legal mumble I will add in. That, and I allways carry my passport.

... just use your melon.

You be amazed how often that doesn't happen. Or, like in most cases, it's used for something other than it's intended purpose ;)
