The manholes with bells on them that I have been in around here are
just a splice room with cables going off into the walls on
either side. The covers are the closed spiderweb type
(same as you would find for a sewer) HEAVY.
Not all that much to see,
the lineman's handset can be used to good extent though.

I would recomend against going into power vaults.
Thats 3 phases of 220 or 440 volts (as I recall)
and the insulation is not always up to par.

Um, usually it's a LOT more than that! you are correct about the insulation however.

-OR-
When you see workers entering the tunnels, buy donuts and offer a bribe.

-OR- if ya feel real ballsy, just plain out ask if you can check out what it looks like down there, and liven up the poor guys day by asking him a sh*tload of questions about what he does down there *more than likely he'll talk your ears off...* Me and a friend did that awhile back, rather kool watching him disconnect, splice, connect, and fiddle with all the wires*THOUSANDS*

Yea, nowadays, all trunking & large-capacity transmissions are all done with fiber-optics. No beige-boxing there, but I think in some of the vaults in gated commnities have biiig telco relays, and that is a beige-boxer's dream come true.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

Well, yea, but it's better with a big bank of phones. Oh, and are ALL trunks now fiber-optic? I know that all of the ones in Fl. are now, but I'm not sure about anywhere else.

I know of a total of one in my semi-rural community. Across the river though they're building a large fiber network. Besides if you want a big bank of phones hit up any can in your area and have at it.

At my work site, all our undergrounds are splice boxes. Basically this is where a large line is split into smaller lines, which then distribute to various buildings. Ours are labeled "S" on the manhole cover for "Signal." Wouldn't recommend exploring since there's not much to see, you need a large ladder to get in and splice cases are meant to withstand the elements, and going into them could cause serious damage to the system. You're not missing much. However, follow that feed into a building...

In Toronto, at least the suburbs, we dont tend to have any underground phone tunnels or junctions, most splices, lines, etc. are done inside above ground cabinets such as below (Although in most cases they are not usually as vanalised). This is not to say they dont exist, but they are just very infrequent, downtown however is most likely a different story.
