| | | I've been hearing rumours about this place for years. You guys know the place: that psuedo-Mexican tourist trap on the NC-SC border, just off I-95. You start seeing billboards for it about 100 miles out. Well, the story is that there was a previous, smaller South of the Border nearby, and when the current one was built, the old one was just abandoned. Anybody know if there's any truth to these rumours? Sorry if this has already been discussed on this forum. I couldn't find anything about it.

| | | No idea. Those things start all the way up north. Hell when I lived in Delaware there was one there (wtf??). But I haven't seen/heard anything about it. Tried to look into it and couldn't find anything either...

You aren't missing much. I went there one day because they have a HUGE selection of fireworks and my buddy wanted to pick some up. We pulled in and it was the biggest dump i've ever seen. THe only place to eat had 37 cent hamburgers which may or may not have been made with beef. I can't really imagine there being another South Of The Border because the whole appeal of the place is that it's right off I95. It's been there for at least 20 years.

It wasn't a dump when I was there probably 3 years ago. I used to stop every year to get fireworks when I lived in Delaware because there was nothing there

I think it's been around since the 50s. The last time I was there was about 15 years ago and I have to agree, it was kind of a dump. Not really anything of interest there. They probably spend more on those billboards than they do to upkeep the actual place! I was looking at some satt pics and didn't see anything that looked like an abandoned amusement park nearby. Guess that really was just a rumour [or maybe it was turned into something else].

I have a feeling it would be near highway 17 if this previous one exisited. But most of the way down highway 17 is stripmalls at this point.
This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit. |

There are 1,001 other abandoned mid 20th century road side attractions along 95 and some parts of 17, so some one probably saw something and assumed they were one is the same. The mexican theme is/was very popular in these kinds of attractions in the south.

| | | ^ That makes sense, that's probably what happened. It's still worth exploring the other 1,001 though!

| | | I've seen what looks like an abandoned motel off of 95 right around South of the Border, but on the other side of 95.
Buildings have two natural enemies- water, and bears. |

| | | South Of The Border is just a tourist trap. A bunch of poorly-maintained buildings and shops full of chinese trinkets that are worse than dollar store quality. A fun place to stop and take a break, but nothing to really explore.

| | | Roland and Andrea, that's probably what got this rumour started. The person who told me about it said that the old SOB was across the highway. They [or whoever started the rumour] probably saw that and thought it was formerly SOB property. I don't think there's any truth to this rumour, though. I looked at the official SOB website. According to that, the big sombrero-hat restaurant is in the place where the original roadside stand used to be. So it's always been right where it is now. It's still owned by the same guy, too, after 50 years...pretty amazing.
