In the last post I couldn't say much because I was grounded from the internet, and had to sneak on to respond. Basically, only one friend could come and I didn't want to meet someone online with only one other person (no offense to you personally).

We did go to the little power plant, and it is very cool. There are two doors in. One is chained, the other is just an empty door frame boarded up. The boarded up door frame can be easily kicked in. On the inside there is virtually no graffiti. There are stairs going down to a basement, but they are filled in after two steps by unmortared bricks. I'm sure I could remove those bricks given enough time. There was also a ladder (not an old one, just a normal steel ladder) to one side. Like the big power plant, there is a boiler room, but in this factory it was on the second floor and is therefore impossible to access without the ladder. All in all, well worth the trip.

Incidentally, I'm going to begin draining soon. Where can I obtain a good topographic map of C'Ville? I've looked on the web, but they aren't so good.

Edit: Found a good site:

One of my friends apparently knows of some drains near UVA. He said most were shrinkers or short, but that there was one pretty long one. I asked him for the exact address, or at least approximate location, but he said he had forgotten. He is going this weekend to refresh his memory.

Cool, glad you made it into that small power plant. It's on my list of places to explore, but I haven't had much time to explore this summer (I've been out of town for work for the past six weeks).

For topo maps, I use http://www.terraserver-usa.com. However, it's not terribly accurate or up-to-date. Print copies of the USGS topo maps are also available in Blue Ridge Mountain Sports.

I'd be interested in hearing about that drain near UVA.

Great to see you back. I was worried I'd scared you off with the suggestion we go exploring ;)

I'm planning on visiting Emmet St. Drain as my frist big exploration, as it's the only one on your site with a description of location (I'm not looking for more info. I'd rather find this one on my own). Is there anything in particular I should know about it? i.e. - low air circulation, holes, deep parts, etc.

I plan to either visit the Emmet St. one with friends this weekend, or the mysterious UVA one. I am also hiking the Rivanna trail in its entirety this sunday, and will keep an eye open for more drains.

I'm pretty sure I've located a new drain. I remember going to Meade Park when I was younger and seeing a drain, then talking with friends in a half-joking way about exploring it and sneaking into buildings (before UE was a serious hobby for me). I've been doing a lot of footwork today. After school, I finally managed to fix my bike and so was riding around Southern Belmont all afternoon.
In some back woods I found a very promising looking manhole, but it turned out to lead to a sanitary sewer. I've been following the drains around from above ground via manholes. A drain near Meade Park would make a ton of sense, based on where the pipes seem to go. It also fits the Topographic maps. I'm gonna check it out Friday afternoon (tomorrow I'm staying after at school for makeup work).

I'm driving the whole 2 hours to C-Ville this weekend to go see a show, and I was thinking of making it a whole day trip and do some site-exploring during the day. I like abandoned houses tho.. I've never been in a factory, so I don't know how much I would or wouldn't like it, but I know i love going in houses, especially ones that haven't been ransacked.

do you know of any good ones? or could you even tell me which of the factories ya'll are talking about would be the best one to go, if i'm only going to one?

any other tidbits about c-ville are welcome too

Charlottesville doesn't have much in the way of factories, besides the big power plant (read about it on http://www.vtunderground.com), which isn't too big. It also has homeless, so I wouldn't suggest it. C'Ville does have a fairly interesting drain system, and that's what I explore more. I would love to explore Emmet St. Drain, or Wetnut 29 with you. I also saw some grates on hinges which I lifted to reveal a big drain which I have yet to explore. I'll PM you about exploring together.

I read an article about Steam Tunnel Explorers, but I didn't read about that. Can you tell me where you saw it?

Any idea where you saw this article (Richmond newspaper? Va Beach newspaper?), and roughly how long ago? Or any idea what kind of tunnels they might be?

I've got unlimited free access to the archives of every major newspaper in the country, but even just searching the VA papers for "charlottesville tunnel" turns up more results than I could sort through in a day (most having to do with the Crozet Tunnel).

Just so anyone interested knows, me and Tick have pretty much been carrying on this conversation with PMs. If anyone else wants info on places in C'Ville (especially drains), then send a message to me or Tick.

Hey all, I haven't done much exploring but I'd like to. I run the rivanna trails pretty much every day so I've probably seen a lot of these places you've been talking about but considering i've been running I haven't been able to stop to check them out. I'm particularly interested in exploring buildings. Have any of you been to the house/hotel down JPA? If you pass Fontaine and keep going under the highway it's on the right. Pretty cool, there's a bunch of rooms.

Welcome! I know the place you're talking about. I think the house by the road was last used as a chinese restaurant. I pass by there fairly often... it was boarded up for a while, but I noticed that it's recently open again. Did you ever see the "Crack Van" that used to be parked out front? I wish I could have gotten a picture of it.

Anyways, the Rivanna Trail is cool. Have you been to the abandoned power plant (well, either of them) down by the river? I'm trying to think of other buildings worth exploring... Blue Ridge Hosiptal is awesome, but very risky. UVA has lots of cool stuff (rooftops, mechanical rooms, and crawlspaces), there's plenty I haven't seen there yet. Can't think of any other building off the top of my head right now (I'm more of an underground guy anyways).

Welcome! It's nice to see some more C'Ville explorers. You should get into draining, as there are two times as many cool drains here as there are aboveground things. I tried to get into the boarded-up Papa John's the other day but it was locked, and I've been to both powerplants a number of times.

Nope, I don't think i've seen that van. Where exactly is the power plant you're talking about? I'm most familiar with the section of Rivanna that runs out in the direction of k-mart. I'd like to see the hospital but just yesterday I had a little run in with the police up on top of the water tower above the Hereford residences and I'd rather not get taken to jail. I've been down in the steam tunnels but nothing else underground. The tunnels were pretty cool but a ton of the passages are blocked off.

The power plant (I don't feel bad giving directions as it's pretty small and has already been vandalized and destroyed as much as possible):
1. Start where you pick up the trail at Quarry Park (where there's that baseball field)
2. Once you cross the bridge, turn left
3. Keep following the trail for a while, and eventually you'll come to where Moore's Creek hits the Rivanna River, and there are train tracks
4. Climb up the train tracks walk along them towards the huge smokestack you can see. It will be on the same side of the river as you (there's another smaller powerplant on the other side of the river with a shorter smokestack)
5. After pushing your way through the brambles, you're there. There is a homeless guy living there (I saw him just three weeks ago), but he seems ok. When I saw him he was leaving the plant and I asked his permission before going in, just to be safe.

Sweet. Have you done both halves of the tunnel network (it's split in half by Emmet Street)? Do you have a map of the tunnels?

I agree that the blocked passages are annoying. It's weird, UVA leaves so many mechanical room and rooftops unlocked, but the steam tunnels are insanely secure.

I only did one half... the half that has the first year dorms on it. I entered through a drain behind Kent. I would have liked to look around more but I was with a lot of people and one guy got really tired. I don't have a map. Are there many cool rooftops? I went up on a few at George Mason in northern VA but I haven't looked around here at all.

Thanks for the directions, I'll be sure to check that out soon. I don't know that i've ever been over on that part of Rivanna.
