WV - Coal mining decay

I will be in the area checking out several key locations in a few days hopefully...

I'm suprised no one has attempted the area yet. It is truely quite saddening. Entire towns are gone; population has been in a STEEP decline since the 1950's (one county once held 100,000 and now hovers around 21,000); entire downtowns abandoned; memorials gutted and burned. What was once a very prosperous area, it had a LOT of millionaires (and once had the highest concentration of millionaires in terms of SQ. MI.), is now one of the poorest in the US.

I've been to some of those places, just be careful!

Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated.

I know this is slightly off topic but please forgive.

Anyone know of any natural caves in virginia worth exploring?

Yeah, the only ones I know at in Bath and Highland Counties. God's country for sure. There are some in the Monteray area and some near Falling Springs. You can go by yourself or with some local guides.

Wow, those are amazing. I would love to check them out. I go up to WV quite a bit, but much more near MD then beckley and that area.

At first I was thinking, this guy wants to go and explore coal mines, but yeah, that actually looks pretty cool.

I've been to a town like that in nevada or new mexico, but it was turned into a tourist town so it was kind of ruined, but still interesting.

I've been in enough coal mines to know that it isn't a safe place despite all their "safety" preaching and BS they pass around. I worked for a company that supplied electric traction drives to companies and I got to see some nifty places

Just not allowed to take a camera. Very bad press apparently.
