When Luck Runs Out

Last night was rough.

We were visiting the Navistar facility in Indy, looking to take some pictures and check around, usual UE things. We got in without a hitch through a hole in the fence and soon are in the building taking pictures.

Everything's going to plan when one of my friends sees a car drive by outside. I look and see that it's a police cruiser. This is obviously bad news, but we figure it's probably just a patrol and that the best course of action is to try and wait it out inside the building.

About a minute passes when a flashlight paints the machines a few yards behind us. We run. At this point we figure it's one guy, still just a security patrol that found out we were in there. We figure, he's in here, so we should take this chance and get out while he's away from his car. We take a side exit, ditch our dust masks and get ready to run. We get about 5 feet from the side of the building when we're surrounded by four police cruisers. We drop our packs and camera's, deciding that we're probably not getting away at this point.

We start talking to the officers, and slowly my cars start showing up. Eventually there are 9 police cars around us, and a K-9 unit gets lead out the building. One of the officers points out a helicopter circling above to be a police helicopter.

I always figured that if I got caught I'd be able to get off with just a warning. I have a nice camera, just taking pictures. I pass a personal search. I talk politely to the cop, tell him that we entered without damaging anything. We weren't stealing or vandalizing.

It was the moment the officer pointed out the circling police helicopter that I decided that such tactics probably wouldn't help. We had drawn far too many resources to get off with just a warning. About an hour later we're in the back of police van, cuffed, heading for juvenile.

At this point, I don't know if the charges will be dropped. The officers told my parents they might be. Either way, those kinds of risky explorations on major sights are off the table for me now.

Long story short: Friday the 13th did me incredibly dirty. Don't visit Navistar. Explore carefully, because, as you all know, it would've been way worse for me if I were 18.

I'll be around.

Sounds like you tripped a silent alarm. That's too much heat; someone saw you or you hit an alarm. When cops have K-9s -and- a chopper they are pissed and had good intel.
Either way night time is very risky. You will be perceived as criminals. If the building isn't 100% light tight you run the risk of your lights or flashes being spotted. Worse if you fail to see a hellhole you might take a real fall. If a building has power expect alarms; truly abandoned structures seldom have power.

If they didn't issue you a ticket or charge you, consider it a stern warning. Don't step on these cops toes again though. You diverted valuable resources from crimes that needed them. Cops don't like that.
Good luck, and lay low for now.

Did they seize the cams or give them back?

I'm really sorry to hear this. If you are still a minor then hopefully the charges won't stay on once you are an adult? Either way be careful out there. Sooner or later luck does run out. I feel like I jinxed you by writing that on the other post. I wish you guys all the best.

As far as I know, a misdemeanor won't be an issue except for getting a government job or something that requires security clearance. Luckily, I wasn't planning on doing anything military, but this definitely knocks out (or at least hinders) some future career paths.

That's a good sign. Be glad you had no tools; pry bar, etc.
Sounds like they'll let it slide.

I had a similiar situation years ago at an abandoned but iconic mill. I consider myself extremely lucky for having avoided an active K9 search for myself and getting out without getting caught but in no way do I ever wish to play that game again. It is absolutely 110% no fun to be hunted haha

Yea we would have given up right away if we knew they had a dog. They said they announced it, but hand to God none of us heard it.

Had a similar fubar when I was happily shooting a Nike site behind a double treeline about a click from about a dozen cops. Thought the sirens and bull horns were for a fire, but it was all for me. They were pissed. The longer they wait you out and the more resources they call in, they more irritated and apprehensive they tend to get.

A kid told them a man with a rifle (my bloody tripod) had gone into the treeline. There was a shooting at a local school a week earlier. The cops certainly were relieved they didn't have a sniper and eventually cooled down. Cops never know what they might be walking into or chasing; always keep that in mind when dealing with them. They had to get within 10 feet of me before they realized my pro gear was cam gear. A 12 gauge shotgun take down isn't fun...

That really sucks man. Hopefully everything will work out and the stuff will be dropped. I hate hearing about stuff like this, because there's people out doing worse things, but it seems like stuff like this gets picked on.

Ran into a similar situation last year. The longer you wait, the worse off you'll be. Just keep a level head, do your best to move forward, and learn from the experience.

Do keep us posted on any additional developments.

The longer I wait? As in wait in the building before heading out? or am I missing something

Will do. For right now, there have been no additional parental punishments. Chill parents said they know I learned my lesson and so any grounding would just be punishment for the sake of punishment, and that's pointless.

I have, however, been helping out around the house an unusual amount because I know they passed up on, out of the goodness of there heart, a fantastic opportunity to destroy my social life.

We're waiting on word from the legal system. I'll keep ya'll informed.

Sorry to hear that man. Can't believe they went through all that effort. Maybe they just got a new chopper and were looking for any excuse. I hope you don't have to pay compensation fines for everything.

Sorry to hear. I've had my eye on that place, but after scouting it seemed too 'fresh,' plus cars were in the main building during the day time. It all seemed bad for my feng shui.

I hope things work out for you (all things considered)

If I was in your situation, I would simply deny I was in the building and say nothing else.

Admitting to a crime, in this case trying to explain you committed a crime but that you didn't damage anything, is pretty much a guarantee you'll be charged with a crime.

Yeah but he was told that he was caught on camera. He would have been in a bigger jam if he lied about being inside.
