Abandoned Catholic Church/School

Founded in 1923, this Catholic congregation used a succession of small buildings as a church and elementary school before their own building was completed in 1925. This building contained a large sanctuary, a second one underneath it in the basement, and classrooms where kindergarten through eighth grade were taught. The church and school grew exponentially in the 1940s; the school was attended by over 1000 children. The elementary school was expanded by three classrooms in 1945 and a high school wing that included a gymnasium and library was added in 1949. Enrollment began to decline steadily in the 1970s and the church and school both closed in 1986 when the church merged with another parish. After a ten year stretch of disuse, the sprawling building was purchased and renovated to be used as a charter school beginning in 1996. After early success, test scores began falling and managerial problems surfaced. The school, which taught kindergarten through sixth grade, closed in 2010 after its charter was revoked.

I'm assuming that Counseling For Sexual Disorders was required reading for the priests...

Cool looking place. It's crazy how fast old schools deteriorate.

Nice photos! Did you report to the office?

Thanks! I did report to the office, actually. The old trash can and fire extinguisher in there didn't seem to object to me going further.

I hope so... ugh. If it was still open in 2010 and they were trying to get LGBTQ kids to go to counseling for their sexuality.... ggggggrrrrrr.... that would be ridiculous. Perhaps part of why it was so unpopular/shut down? neat photos though, I especially loved #3,5,7 and 10 with the hanging paint peel and decay. mmmm. so good.

be kind, stay weird.

Didnt they just pull a TG book out of a Wi school? Was reading something about that. Apparently happens in 2015 too.

I highly doubt it, as to that being the reason it was shut down.
