How Dangerous Are Asbestos, Really?

If you don't disturb the particles too much, wouldnt it be alright to go into a building with asbestos with just a mouth cover on? No? Also, does anyone have any horror stories or surprise!asbestos stories?

If you snort it like cocain with a rolled up $20 you will gain abandonment super powers!!!

But the powers only allow you to peel paint, grow mold, and smell like a wet dog on command.

But still, powers!!!

The one time, one little particle and your dead thing is a myth, If you worked with it on a daily basis in the 70's when factories that used it for their product then you have a great chance of developing asbestosis ( non cancer scarring of the lungs )

As far as the contact in urbex, well everything has a risk. but chances are you would have to do daily urbex and intentionally kick up the dust for a year to feel the effects

Remember Asbestos was in everything in the 60's and 70's if it was as dangerous as the myth would have you believe, half the american population would be dead by now

My take on it from what I've found in medical literature has found is here:
http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=1&pp#post11

Overall risk of suffering an illness from asbestos seems to be quite low, however a respirator is very advisable due to the myriad other airborne hazards of exploring.

I say just wear the respirator. They're not too expensive, and if nothing else it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Nice.

A respirator can be annoying, but whenever I wear one (rarely anymore because lazy), I have a... "healthier" experience and felt energized longer. Without it, the dust and mold would wear me down and I'd have black boogers clogging my nose by the end of the day. Locations with plenty of fresh airflow are a different story.

The challenge with asbestos is that it's inert, fireproof, insoluble and NEVER breaks down inside of your body. Whatever asbestos fibers you inhale throughout our life will be still be inside your coffin 1000years after you're dead and fully decomposed. The shit never goes away.

Many scientests theorize that cancers like Mesothelioma are caused by the ongoing inflammation / scarring associated with those tiny, barbed pieces of asbestos shifting around inside your lungs, year after year. The amount of damaged caused by even a single fiber could very well lead to the development of cancer. The actual damage is impossible to quantify, and quite frankly we don't know enough about cancer to make any sort of firm determination one way or the other.

There are people who smoked and worked around asbestos for decades and died of old age, while there are people who never smoked a day in their life and still develop lung cancer. It's a total mystery and the truth is that there's no good answer. Personally, I wear a respirator when its truly necessary (known or labelled asbestos) or convenient for me to do so. Of course I've free-lunged it many times as well, but a little bit of prevention certainly isnt going to hurt.

I've heard that once asbestos particles get into your lungs it's almost impossible for your body to eject them.

Steve McQueen's health problems late in life were caused by handling asbestos in a shipyard as a young man.

Minimal sporadic asbestos exposure like you'd get from exploring won't hurt you.

Honestly, black mold should be a bigger concern. I've gotten sick from that a few times, both exploring and at work. The exploring instances wore off within a day or two.

The work instance, I was sick for a couple weeks. Probably because I kept going back to work every day and re exposing myself for 8 hours at a time. We were running the fire alarm cabling in the basement on a new construction site. Black mold was everywhere because they decided to put all the drywall up down there before the roof and drainages were completed, so every time it rained it left huge puddles and soaked the drywall. It was humid with no real good air flow so it never dried out. It really sucked. Wear a respirator.

The only time I've felt sick from what I believe was asbestos was around this time last year, during what ended up being my last explore of a now-demolished hospital. The morgue was pretty much the only thing left, and almost immediately upon going down there, an awful smell overcame my nostrils and I just could not shake it. It seemed like within thirty minutes, I couldn't shake a pounding headache, so we left.

I was sick for the next full week. I still don't know what it was down there, but my voice was gone, my head was pounding and I just felt weak. Luckily it subsided, but I've been more open to wearing some sort of respirator nowadays.

One asbesto is not too bad. Two is trouble.

"Will that be debit or credit?"

Overall-- it's best just left in place. But of course you can't always do that.(ie remodeling)

I worked asbestos removal and most of the time, the job was just removing it from a single pipe. For example someone is upgrading a furnace, and there would be just one pipe with asbestos insulation.

We'd have to suit up, but it was a pretty easy job... wet it down, wrap in plastic and pull it off.

Lots of it was just left in place, such as the insulation around the conduit that would sit between the furnace and the floor/wall that fed all the vents. Usually we'd spray it with encapsulant which looked like watered down milk. I'm guessing it was latex, but I honestly never asked.

In general the laws for removing it and transporting it are a lot more strict than the laws about having it in a building.

Encountering it a couple times a year won't do much. There are people working and living in buildings with it all the time. As long as it's not stirred up into the air, you are unlikely to breathe it in.

But overall, even just a dust mast is good, if for no other reason than you always end up breathing in dust of all kinds in old places.

BTW, I always read a lot (of lecturing) about respirators on here...but does anyone REALLY know HOW to test their respirator?

And how they are tested to OSHA standards? I only do because I was doing asbestos removal.

It's better than nothing...but unless you're doing at least the basic test, you every well could be still breathing in all kinds of things. But like I said-- no where near the rate you would if you wore nothing...
