| | Needing help with being detected at night. < on 3/6/2009 12:18 AM >
| | | i need help entering this building that is very close to a busy road. im entering at night. it wont be hard since the door is open. (i will have to look out for the homeless) but my problem is looking around without the lights giving off our positions. i have nvgs. but they have bad depth perception so they are only good for looking around and not while moving. i know using red led lights are good but i dont have many.

| | | I agree with Drooldog. Day time is the way to go. No point making an already risky hobby any worse by not seeing how rotted the floorboards look. Is there a POE on the backside? Shielded from the road?

| | | It may be a bad idea to explore a building like that so close to a main road at night. If it were me, I would go during the day, its a lot less suspicious. I have had this same dilemma before. Try going on a Sunday or Saturday morning, not many people out then. But since you got goggles, your chances of being spotted at night are minimal. Speaking from experience, if you go at night, park your car far enough away that you can sneak away to it with out being seen, but not close enough that cops would spot it easily.

| | | sorry im new. but what dose poe mean? its much too risky at the day. the enterance is at the left of the building. the road leads to the highway that leads to the next city. so its highly traveld. but practicly empty durring the night. getting "into" the building is easy. but being able to explore it without being detected is the hard part.

Point of entry. You have to consider the reaction time of police, though. On the off chance you're spotted wandering in (early Sunday morning is best) you still have some time to see the floor conditions. Then, leave. But really, who pays attention? Or, stick around with a big tripod and explain to police, depends on your own neighborhood as to whether or not this will work.

| | | All the advice above is good advice. I know it would be fun to take your night vision goggles and rappelling gear but it's a heck of a lot easier to convince someone you're an innocent photographer if you LOOK like an innocent photographer. Don't make it a big production number, just go and enjoy. SAFELY!

| | | I totally agree with everyone. I know that building, but I've never been in it. It could be done in daytime. If you haven't done this before, hook up with someone who can go with you and kinda show you the ropes a little. I just don't explore at night anymore. It's WAY too risky. Not just because of the people you might run into, but more the structure itself. You can see well what you are stepping onto, or into. I've got some NVG's and I still don't go in places at night anymore. Besides, there is no way you could go into that building at night with ANY kind of light without risk of being seen. And obviously, you can't go in without a light. Don't feel bad, everyone here has been new at this at one time, and we've all been there. Trust me. Get someone to go with you and show you some tricks about doing it during the day. Even if you get busted, like Barry said, it's easier to convince them your an innocent photographer if you look like an innocent photographer. One of my favorite practices is that old quote (and I don't know if this is exact)... but it says "the best way to hide, is in plain sight". Go during the day. With someone.

| | | I just had the same dilema crop up. Went to a location at night. Got in just fine, but couldn't see shit without using flashlights. And the place is close enough to the road any passing car would've seen it lit up light a Christmas tree. There was shit everywhere inside, including at least one hole in the floor, so we deceided it was best to return during the day when we could see where to go a little easier. Above all, saftey is your #1 priority. Yeah, getting busted might suck, but falling through the floor of an abandonment at night would suck worse.

Do you have Three Dollars?
You can pick this stuff up at Wal-Mart or similiar. Used to repair a broken automotive break light. Slap some of this over your regular flashlight. The more layers of tape you put on... the less the light shines through.

| | | I'd do it during the day. If you're dead set on entering under the cover of darkness, go in before dawn and wait till the sun comes up to explore. I don't think it's worth it for such a small building, but whatever, it works.

| | | I tend to agree with Barry here. It certainly doesn't seem like anyone is overly worried about securing that building, what with no fence, and an open door and windows. I explore almost excusively at night, so I wouldn't shy away from that aspect, just keep an ear out for approaching cars, extinguish the torch when one comes by (or aim it at a point where they can't detect it from the outside), and git 'er done!

| | | Day time is much better. You can see all the details and the pictures are way better. Safer too. Drivers in cars passing the building at speed are not likely to notice a dim flashlight (or even you) as they are concentrating on the road, not the structure (tunnel vision). For daytime fun, dress in some older, faded, ratty clothing. Like Raticus said, "Hide in plain sight". If you look homeless, no one gives you a second glance... Unless you are cleaning their windshield. Pick a color that matches well with the surroundings. Green for foliage (not necessarily cammo), grey for places with lots of concrete. Try to stay close to the structure & cover, and remember that people notice motion more than shape, so move slowly. They can look right at you and not see you... until you move. That's how I avoid being seen. Post the pix when you get back please

| | | Your age probably works against you, too. You fit the "about to cause trouble" demographic, and a cop who sees you sneaking off will assume you're going off to do something stupid, like tag someone's wall, or steal something, or sniff paint, or build an atomic weapon, or something. So leave your spray paints, lock picks, and plutonium at home. Think of the stupidest thing you've heard of someone your age doing... and assume that the friendly policeman on the corner suspects you of doing it in the next five minutes. Then keep that in mind if you do get caught. It's not a good time to exercise your right to remain silent -- I'd suggest being really, really excited about the artistic photographs you're taking. The one time I got caught (in a drain), I offered to show them the pictures. They said, "Nah, we've been in there before." That's probably the case for any abandoned building you find, too.

I'm not far from Shreveport. If you want to set up a time to go, I'll go with you and do what I can to get you started without getting busted. If needed, we'll use a pre-planned "social engineering excuse" that I'll fill you in on before we get there. I can't go this weekend or next (out of town) but I'll set something up with you if you're not in a hurry. But we're going to do it during the daylight! Take the plunge.

| | | I pretty much never go out at night anymore. It can be a lot easier to hide in shadows and what not, but it's a lot harder to actually see where you're going. It's been my experience that Sundays are usually pretty good for doing daytime excursions into places. Generally speaking if you walk up to a place like you're supposed to be there you don't get any questions. As RobertB mentioned, your age does work against you a bit in that area, but when you don't look like you're up to anything generally people don't assume that you are. Good luck with the exploring and have fun!

| | | well my excuse for going into storm drains is that my dad owns a surveying company and hes to old to crouch in these drains and retreive geodetric beacons. another one is that water has been flooding into our property from the backed up storm drain and my dad sent me down to go see if theres a blockage. a third is that there is a blockage causeing alot of stagnant water therefore a ton of mosquitos. so we are helping the enviornment by breaking up the trash dam [last edit 3/7/2009 6:01 PM by Crab_Soul - edited 1 times]

OMG, that brings back memories. I spent the summer delivering pizzas in Bossier City (in the '80s, before the casinos), and I've never seen the like of mosquitoes. They were so fast that they'd painted themselves with black-and-white racing stripes, I kid you not. One day I decided to take the dashboard off my car (for no particular reason), and by the time I was done, the mosquito bites on my mosquito bites had mosquito bites on them.
