| | | Brickworks (No, not that one) < on 10/11/2008 1:44 AM >
| | | Out in Caledon today to a location I've seen many times while hiking but I had never been inside before. Into the first building on this property to take a few pictures. No flash and no tripod but I improvised. The exposures were up to 10 seconds long and I was amazed at how quickly I burned through the battery of my Nikon D60. By the time I got to the second, more interesting building, my battery was dead. I bought a second battery this afternoon. As always, comments and criticisms are welcome. 1.

There are a lot of better pictures to be had here. A return visit will be made.

| | | Nice. Those interior shots turned out well with the long exposure. I'm wondering if anyone has taken a peek down one of the tunnels there. [last edit 10/11/2008 10:58 AM by phrenzee - edited 1 times]

| | | Damn, I didn't even see that. After my camera battery died I thought I'd try to leave some of the site unexplored for my return visit. I'll check it out and report back.

| | | Those "tunnels" are not tunnels per se, instead they are part of a sprawling underground kiln. I believe the Cheltenham Brickworks were the first in the world to use such a kiln.

Inspired by your post I went over to http://www.caledon...nt&task=view&id=97 where I found that "Over 90,000 bricks a day were produced. The continuous burning or “railway tunnel” kilns was the first of its kind in Canada, measuring 250 feet in length." I wonder how much of the 250 feet of kilns is left?

It is such a wonderful area. I really liked the small quarry nearby.

| | | I finally had an opportunity to return to Cheltenham today and went to buildings #2 and #3. I brought the tripod this time but forgot the FLASHLIGHT - dumbass! In my defense it was a last minute decision to stop here. It was a beautiful day but very bright and contrasty. The light through the doorways made the interior shots difficult.
