| | | | rat race < on 9/5/2008 3:51 AM >
| | | Here's some pics from my last trip to the rat race with Alex, I noted which ones he took at the bottom, also a lot of these pics are from his website not mine because I was to lazy to upload them myself. I we started out in a small side tunnel not far from the entrance
II for some reason it got bigger as we went upstream
III it got way bigger
IV and deeper
V we didn't have a boat so we went back to the main tunnel
VI here's me standing under what used to be a railroad bridge in the main tunnel
<by alex> VII standard Dallas arch
VIII a completely plugged up side pipe
IX the next section was brick
X insane formations
XI and rain
XII after the brick was a section of corrugated steel coated with tar and mortar
<by alex> XIII and then some square concrete
<also by alex> XIV a steel pipe with water pouring out of it
XV This water main marks the spot where we ended our previous trip, so from here on was new to us
XVI another section of brick
<by alex> XVII I think this was a water main once, but now its unused, it went along the whole section of rbp like this
XVIII the ceiling got lower (and square) again and Alex was tired so he took this last shot before I went on alone
XIX at the end of the square section I came to some more brick, this would be the last section of tunnel before I reached the end
XX which was a curbside drain on Jackson street

| | | It seems a little counterintuitive to go in there the hard way... but oddly appealing.

| | | Hey....
I think that is the same drain that was my very first (and thus far, only) drain that I've explored. Your pictures rock!
hey RobertB, is this the same drain?
Please excuse the goofiness of this picture. I'm scared of roaches.

edit: I'm glad I got to go in there when I did, because after the car accident, there is no way I can bend down and walk that far... (the black tar part...) edit #2 to add: I look like Baby Huey. [last edit 9/5/2008 4:18 PM by Happiedaze - edited 2 times]

| | | I'm sure it is -- I can't imagine that exact geometry existing anywhere else. I've been terribly tempted to drag a sledgehammer down there and uncover the remains of the other side, except that I'd end up exposing a bunch of dirt which would erode away in the next big rain and swallow up a significant municipal building. My favorite pic from that trip:
(Side note: I also wish I could bust through the basement of my grandparents' old place in Kentucky, built on the site of the entrance to family's old coal mine. Who's with me? )

Now that sounds like fun to me. Count me in.
...the wings on my shoes shrank now the moths won't eat my kidneys, when i shake my state capital it only yields 3 fairy napkins, but how do i know my banana slippers are like water boats because when the moon winks it burns my hamster punches, and that's how you get to llama school rowing your canoe backwards up main street when the front bumper falls off, do mermaids get to drink orange juice? |

| | | How'd the name "rat race" come about? If the reason is compelling enough I'll change the DB, I just called it Big D cause it runs under downtown but I like Rat Race better. (same with Beaver Drain in Ft Worth, thats what most people know it by)

| | | Its a similar story with the beaver tunnels, he spotted some nutria playing in the pond by the outfall and mistook them for beavers the name stuck
