| | | It seems like all the discussion across the various aspects of a total site overhaul have kinda led to a sort of paralysis where no decisions are getting made, and therefore no progress is ever achieved. In the spirit of the old saying, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!", perhaps a more manageable approach might be to break down the fundamental decision points into a series of poll questions that could be replied to by concerned parties. Perhaps a good first question might be... "Do you like the current hex-pattern theme to the UER site design, or would you like to see it updated with a more contemporary look?" The answer to this question could lead to a relatively simple first action step, the updating of the graphical elements of the site, which, among the things being considered for modification would almost certainly be one of the easiest changes with the least amount of impact to the actual functionality of the site, but it could have a great effect on the visual appeal. So then, if one assumes the consensus would be to update the graphical elements first, then some of the more operational questions could be posed, in a logical order. Personally, I don't see a pressing need at this point for any operational changes; I like the site's functionality as it is, but other folks have differing opinions that most be heard, and maybe using a poll system would be a more manageable way to resolve these questions fairly. Hey, I'm just sayin'...I agree with Av-X; the hex pattern theme is killin' me!

| | | The problem is, while the hexes may be somewhat dated, UER's current look is functional and usable. None of the designs I've seen thus far have inspired me; none have made me say "Yes! THAT'S UER!" -av

| | | The design is fine. It's easily read, understood, and one may navigate through it easily. To alter the design suggests that it is not working properly, and that's not the case. To alter the design suggests that it needs improvement, and that's not the case. My $.02. (CAN)

John McCain's campaign just came out (today?) with a commercial that features the hexagon design. Not that that's a bad thing, but rather it shows the hexagon is still a topical design move.

McCain's use of the hexagon is code for 'Eat More Oatmeal,' and is part of the endorsement deal between McCain and Wilford Brimley. You did know that Mr. Brimley is endorsing McCain for president, didn't you?

| | | I'm not going to read this entire thread. Please whatever you do don't pick a slick looking design that functions horribly. Please keep usability as a major goal. Also, the current design is just wonderful. Just my quick two cents.

Damn. I have submitted 3 separate design ideas that would function horribly, and completely eschew usability. I guess they won't get picked now.

good idea. at my former office, one of the IT guys had a program called" Full Felix". it was a little black and white cat, that walked back and forth, and would rub its head on your cursor. nothing like cute little furry creatures.

| | | Wouldn't it be distracting to have something like that around the cursor? I think that UER is alright as it is; it's functional, easy to get around in, and by this time people know how to use it. In short, it would make more sense just to keep it as it is now.

Haha, I take it you weren't around this site near christmas time? Santa, reindeer, and snowmen galore!! I personally loved it, but people actually took hiatuses because it pissed them off so much (and I guess they couldn't figure out how to use adblock).

| | | It's a distinctive and instantly identifiable design. The design can simply be freshened. The hexagons can be slightly wider and shorter, and that gloss graphic scheme could be worked in, a la Vista. Keep the grey, but choose different shades. That's all it takes.

| | | I say you do a more industrial-esque design, to symbolise Urban Exploring, cos the group IS Urban Exploration Resources, right? I say you do the UER in the upper left in jagged, rusty looking letters, make everything all grungy. Of course, then, to comply with everyone's tastes, you'd have to do more skins, cos I don't see people loving industrial-grungy skins on their website.
