| | | A P100 mask removes 99.97% of particulate matter 0.3 um (micrometers) or greater, and can remove oil-based aerosols. An N100 mask cannot be used with oil-based aerosols. P100 and N100 masks are suitable for removing asbestos. P95 and N95 masks are not suitable. If it is equipped with an organic vapor cartridge, it can also remove such vapors as gasoline, benzene, etc., but it is NOT usable against hydrogen sulfide, or low oxygen concentrations. OV cartridges are also ineffective against certain compounds (e.g. butane) due to short service life. An Acid Gas cartridge may be used against sulfur dioxide (SO2); it can also be used against hydrogen sulfide (H2S), but such use is approved only for escape situations. 3M's web site has some very detailed information on respirators.
