| | | a Great "point'n'shoot" Camera for UEing < on 5/18/2008 4:46 AM >
| | | Heres a great durable "point'n'shoot" camera for "Urban Exploring" in even the worst locations. when i'm going to a new location, i first go with a simple "point'n'shoot" camera. this way i can determine if the location is worth (risking, losing or damaging due to-dirt/water/dropping...etc.) dragging out all my good camera and equipment to. after 5 years of excellent reliable service, i decided to retire my old "olympus stylus" point'n'shoot camera. Olympus makes great, durable, user-friendly cameras(for any level of photographer) that take decent pictures perfect for UEing. i went to Henery's looking for another olympus camera, i was shown the "Olympus stylus 1030 SW". they had it submerged in a tank of water, the clerk pull it out of the water and thur it on to the floor, stepped on it then kicked it towards me and told me to take a picture. i worked fine! its the most advanced/durable point'n'shoot camera on the market to date. i was sold, it cost me just over $500, including- 1GB memory card, 3 year warranty, rubber skin and floating strap! its worth every penny, i've had it for 3 weeks now and i'm really impressed! FEATURES: 10.1 mega pixels, 3.6x optical zoom, wide 28mm lense, 2.7" hyper crystal LCD display, digital image stabilization, face detection, shadow adjust water proof to 33'/10m, drop proof from 6.6', 220lb crush proof, works in -10*c. and lots more. www.olympusamerica...?product=1363&fl=2
They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

| | | if you are looking for cheap point and shoots for taking a beating check out these ebay sellers http://photography...ndturnQ2dcloseouts http://photography...sassZsoldQ5fbroken They sell all their items "as-is," and although they are listed as such, the imperfections are described fully. "Broken" to them can be as little as missing a button, an LED indicator not working, a ghosting LCD, etc. Its worth checking out.

| | | Ooh that's a great camera. I've been using my Cannon SD 600 for about 2 years now and I love it too. For an older model point-and-shoot it works pretty well.

are they worth $500...? to me they are, it can take only one drop to wreck a camera... its also one less thing to worry about. i'm a plumber, i use this camera for work (i take a lot of pix of water damage, floods etc...) and it just happens to be good for this hobbie! it also a write off. it might not be in your or everyones price range, but if you can afford it why not? we all have things we didn't need to spend so much money on! some people will spend $10,000.00 of a plasma tv, just to sit there like a zombie... $200 on an 8-ball of cocaine(not myself) that you put up your nose... money's made to go around, you can take it with you in the end!

drains? there are times i consider buying a Nikonos just so i don't have to worry about killing my D80 in drains. i did pick up a Yashica T4 last weekend at goodwill for $3. i hear they're not too bad, Zeiss lens and a good enough meter to use Velvia. i'll let you know how that turns out.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with camera gear taking a plunge while draining and that includes some of the more extreme conditions inside Montreal's sewer system. occasionally things can get a little moist, but even cheap point and shoots are built to be able to withstand a bit of dampness now and again.

| | | Posted by shotgun_mario i'm ordering one tonight. I was looking for a point-n-shoot that I could pocket into places, and when you showed that the toughened stylus takes good pictures, I was finally sold. No more worrying about damaging my camera! UPDATE: just once question, how's the battery life on it? I'm always worried that It'll die on me right before the picture-of-the-day, and because it doesnt run on replaceable batteries I'm even more careful. Would you suggest getting a secondary battery (if possible?) I haven't read anywhere about being able to swap batteries on it at all.
|
the batterie is rechargeable lithium, it lasts quite a while altho i dont use the flash all that often. but i'd say its an average rechargeable batterie, with a 2 hour quick-charge! you can buy an extra batterie for about $40.

| | | Olympus cams have always been extremely underrated - why, I don't know. My first digicam was an Olympus (D340r), followed by D510z - and when I moved in to the DSLR format, I went with an Olympus e10 at the time. The e10 has taken close to 750,000 shots in 6+ years and still works like a charm. One tough sonuvabitch - even after droppin' it 30-feet down a rocky slope in to a dry riverbed years ago.
You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials. |

Olympus cameras are great, Silent Knight's right about Olympus being extremely underrated! my first "olympus stylus" was dropped many times, the worst that ever happened was the card cover door broke(it was fixed at no charge). the only thing i dont like about the "Olympus stylus 1030 sw" is low light pictures are grainy without the flash. other then that its great! i also have the "Olympus SP-550UZ" its a great mid level camera. it does great in low light especially with the remote cable and the shutter can be held open for up to 8 minutes.

Especially when you see they completely ruined this camera with: 1/1000 sec. –1/2 sec. (up to 4 sec. in Night Scene mode) 4 seconds? Good luck with near darkness shots and inside sealed buildings! Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |
