How'd we get here, and how are we getting out of here?!

| | | The problem with the backlight of that picture is that there was no way to hide behind it and light it... If you look closely you can see me hiding behind it! I would really like to re-shoot it, but the entrance is now extremely complex.

| | | I know gear can be an obsession, and is covered in a ton of places, but I've finally got my "sweet spot" worth of gear and figured I'd share.
I'm a huge fan of the Streamlight series, specifically the the Stylus Pro. It's tiny, comes with a belt holster that's extra convenient. It's also super bright and I'd trust it past a maglight for its footprint/size. http://www.streaml...oduct.aspx?pid=133 They also make a TwinTask model that does LED, xenon (mag-light style), and laser pointer to point stuff out. Also, if you're bringing water, either get something that can attach to a caribeaner and thus to your belt, or grab an Aqua clip - www.aquaclip.com to snap onto your belt and carry a water. I use Setwear gloves in my industry (filmmaking) and they make great glove clips. http://setwear.com/GloveClips.html I use them when I'm out with my older Home Depot gloves. They're thinner and get the job done.
Around my belt I keep: water via aquaclip, gloves on clip, streamlight stylus pro, and a leatherman. Around my head I've got a Black Diamond spot LED. And around my shoulder I've got my camera gear. Cheers

| | | Hmm, interesting how a topic about equipment can turn so quickly into a topic about backlighting. Anyway, I've got a few thoughts... first of all, imagine how much use I could get out of combining my air force/fighter plane obsession with exploration!
Now pick away a few pieces of that setup (like the Top Gun glasses... heh), and imagine how useful it suddenly becomes. It's a setup designed to be used not just in the air, but as a survival kit on the ground in case you happen to eject. Now that's what I call "perfect". Depending on the price, of course... I have no idea how much a setup like that may cost (and I know there's no chance in heck of me affording anything over $10 any time soon...). Second, I haven't noticed anyone mentioning LED-based crank flashlights around here yet... when I go for a flashlight, I don't go for my cell phone, I go for either the flash on my Pocket PC's camera (which stays on all the time and makes an excellent flashlight), or my 5-LED crank flashlight. Anyone got any experience with those, or, perhaps, why I shouldn't use one? Or would that be a good idea? =) [last edit 5/26/2008 11:44 PM by Falcon4 - edited 1 times]

I usually carry a little crank LED light draining. It isn't terribly bright, but it's there in case my proper torch fails. And my headlamp. And my other headlamp. And my other torch. And my keyright light...

| | | Ahh, I usually slap people upside the head that carry around those battery guzzling incandescent flashlights. LEDs are a lot more efficient and brighter, and you rarely even need to change the batteries. I'll probably settle for maybe a 12-LED flashlight or something... something super-bright that runs on batteries (and still uses, like, half the power of a dimmer "traditional" flashlight). Ahh... once I get a job, that is. Stupid economy. =( edit:

Sadly, the world of high-power LED lights guzzle batteries with the best of them My little high-power LED gives my old incandescent spotlight a run for its money in brightness, but it'll completely drain a pair of rechargeable CR123As in 45 mins

| | | Wurh? That doesn't make any sense, LEDs don't produce light by heat like incandescent bulbs do, they release photons and all sorts of slick scientific crap (*yeah, LEDs release slick scientific crap!*)... so, I dunno, maybe you aren't comparing apples to apples? Different types of batteries maybe? o_O Ah well, can't really argue anyway, I don't own one. Maybe when the day comes when my bank account isn't crying for mercy, I'll be able to compare flashlights ;)

I only discovered the brave new world of LEDs when I was shopping for a new torch recently. LEDs do indeed produce heat, just much less than incandescent bulbs do for a given amount of light produced. The new, really bright LEDs are mounted on heatsinks that are often attached to an aluminium body to dissipate heat, and some can even get too hot to touch! These lights can run on AAs, and AAAs, but more often they use higher voltage batteries like CR123As. The low-voltage batteries like AAs are often run through a regulator circuit to boost the voltage to the LED itself, which provides other benefits, too, such as constant brightness until the battery is drained. Here is the forum that gave me far more information than my poor brain could handle - it's good stuff http://www.candlep...umdisplay.php?f=45 This technology is just blasting ahead at the moment - just when you get all smug about having the latest and greatest LED unit, a new one comes out that gives twice the brightness...

They are loud, and the ones I've used tend to die. But they make an excellent back up. Especially for draining, as metawaffle pointed out. My current crank-flashlight had the caps die, so one has to crank continuously whenever light is required... which means the whole lighting something so I can do something with my other hand is right out the window. But it was pretty decent for a few months before that. Crank for 30 seconds, 2minutes of bright light, a minute of usable light. Give it a shot if you think you might like it, just don't depend on it. Edit: grammar, and to add: They are cheap nowadays too ( < $10) [last edit 5/27/2008 2:37 PM by MindHacker - edited 1 times]

| | | i'll admit that vest is bad ass, it would be great in colder weather. but at the same time i dont want to start looking like my grandfather when he goes fishing! how much gear do you really need instant access to? i prefer cargo pants and if its cold my standard issue "old navy" goose down vest. and at no time ever, do i have anything strapped to my belt... sometime i'll have my 3-d cell maglite thru my belt and down into my back pocket!(if you don't know why, then read my posts...)

| | | It's definitely a personal choice. I like everything to be well secured and to have easy access to all items. I probably carry some items that other explorers do not. I also avoid exploring in the spring and summer, so extra clothing (like a vest) does not bother me. I should also mention that I only explore buildings in rural areas. No cities, ghettos, drains, or anything of that nature. I am sure that the target, area, and time of year all effect what gear a person brings.
