| | | "Get Loose" Tagger finally caught! < on 5/26/2008 2:20 AM >
| | | Okay, so if you aren't from the Niagara Region, or the Toronto area, this might not mean much to you. But the tagger of the phrase "Get Loose" was finally caught in the act and arrested after 4 months of making a mess of St. Catharines, and then moving on to Toronto. Here is the article, I am sure Silent Knight is gonna LOVE this since I am sure he spends a good portion of his day documenting this guys "art Work"
Get Loose drummer tagged in T.O.; Shane Tyrer accused of painting graffiti Posted By TIFFANY MAYER The former drummer of a St. Catharines punk band whose name, Get Loose, became a blight on the Garden City landscape last year, has been arrested in connection with a four-month graffiti bender in Toronto. Shane Tyrer, 20, has been charged with seven counts of mischief under $5,000 following an investigation by Toronto Police into a proliferation of Get Loose graffiti tags, among others, in that city's west end earlier this year. Between December 2007 and March 2008, the Etobicoke intersection of The Queensway and Islington Avenue was the canvas for the signatures Get Loose, GYS, Cahoots and Riff Raff. A Toronto Police news release said the tags were spray-painted, inked and etched onto walls, signs and vehicles in the area. Tyrer was one of four men arrested in the case. Get Loose became a common sight in St. Catharines in late 2006, when it was repeatedly scrawled on highway overpasses, sculptures and businesses here. It also appeared on gateway signs in Niagara Falls and Fonthill. A Toronto newspaper reported last week that a break in the case came when a Queensway-area apartment rented to some of those arrested was vacated. The same tags were left behind on some furniture. That newspaper also reported Tyrer was busted in Uxbridge May 2 after performing with the band Liferuiners at a pub there. Gregory Moore, Liferuiners' manager, said in an e-mail to The Standard that Tyrer wasn't a member of the band when he was arrested. He played drums for the group between December 2007 and April 2008. Tyrer played the Uxbridge show because the band's new drummer couldn't make the gig, Moore wrote. "Shane left the band with much debt, so he decided to play a last show to make back some money for the band," he said. Two of the other three men arrested in the Get Loose case also had connections to Liferuiners. Sterling Healey, 20, of Uxbridge, was the band's tour manager. Danny Surjanac, 19, of Sutton, was filling in for the band's singer the night of the arrests. "The band does not support vandalism, but does believe graffiti is a form of art and expression," Moore said in his e-mail. "It's unfortunate three great kids got arrested." Ryan McCarney, 18, of Kirkfield, was also arrested. Each was also charged with seven counts of mischief under $5,000. Tyrer, who played drums for Get Loose before the band split more than two years ago, denied any knowledge of who was behind the local graffiti when contacted by The Standard in January 2007. At the time, Tyrer was singled out on a Scene Music Festival Internet message board as the culprit responsible for the surge in Get Loose and GYS tags appearing throughout St. Catharines. GYS stands for Get Your Skate, a Get Loose song. Tyrer's MySpace webpage at the time listed vandalism and robbery as his interests. Tyrer also responded to one post on the message board that suggested the tags were done by drunk kids in Welland, saying that theory was wrong. But Tyrer told The Standard his online posts were a joke and didn't know who was doing the graffiti. Tyrer did not respond to an e-mail sent by The Standard Monday. Niagara Regional Police Const. Jacquie Forgeron said local investigators are aware of the Toronto arrests. However, she said it's too early to tell what impact it will have on investigations here.

Tyrer's MySpace webpage at the time listed vandalism and robbery as his interests. Goodness fuck, what an idiot. There just simply isn't any excuse when an asshat like Tryer tags up public and private property that he does not own. He is a vandal; what he did is not art. Punishment for Tryer and his asshat buddies should be cleaning up the vandalism. Unless you have permission from the owner of the property you're tagging, it's not art, it's vandalism. Period. A similar asshat tagged up a residential fence in my neighborhood. They are tagging cars too. They are stealing those solar lights people place in their lawns as well. If caught in the act by a property owner, I'd hope the tagger doesn't mind when the property owner beats the living shit out of them, because they'd totally deserve the beat down.

Well said Fedge. My friend from Alberta made a good suggestion. I guess out there, if a building is tagged the property owner is fined, if the tagging isn't cleaned off within 24 hours. Yes this is a pain in the ass for the building owner, but on the other hand, he says there is little to no tagging in his area because the taggers just know it will be cleaned off in 24 hours and it's pointless. Maybe starting something like this in Ontario would be a good plan.

| | | The always intelligent goons at Toronto city hall have a great policy about graff: If your house or business gets tagged, you gots ta clean it up within a set time. One business owner, who constantly has her business tagged and kept on painting over it, elected to hire some students to paint a mural on the wall. Since then, vandals have not tagged it once. Problem solved, right? No, city hall councillor Sandra Bussin, because she attended art school at York Uni, has declared the mural "not art". She has a "sense" when something is art or not. She's a self-appointed expert on art. She's demanding the mural be removed, no doubt to be immediately replaced by taggings. Read the whole stupid story here. Sadly, the majority of Toronto city hall councillors are arrogant goons who refuse to tackle real issues while spending all their time on petty bullshit. | | | Yep, I read about them catching this punk in the newspaper last week. Long overdue to catch that clown. Our guys spent considerable time documenting all the crap he's sprayed all over the city. They should sit him in a chair on a flatbed truck and drive him slowly along St. Paul St. and let everyone pelt the fucker with rotten veggies. Then make him clean up the entire mess, along with all the tagging he's done. Now all they need to do is catch the fucker who smashed all the windows in the library, courthouse and 110 James St.

That's too bad, especially the part about the that woman self-appointing herself as an art guru. I don't think any of those officials ever have 1+1=2 if you ask me. If it makes sense, they won't do it. Tis a real shame.

Every city has their own version of a few "arrogant goons" and imbeciles on city council, including St. Catharines. Intelligence and logic aren't pre-requisites for getting elected to council, unfortunately.

I think him cleaning it up would be a great punishment. At his own expense as well, matching paint colours, paying for all the pain and accessories, etc... Then a nice little jail sentence to set the example for the rest of the ass clowns out there that think they can get away with it.

The basics of the city's policy on graffiti, and transformation art boil down to this, regardless of how tacky and tasteless a given project is, it is art if its done with brushes and vandalism if done with spray cans. These jokers don't know shit about art either way -- but its the medium which is in question, and that city has been putting pressure on businesses to remove murals they have paid for, if they happened to be painted by spray cans. As for petty bullshit? Why talk about the real stuff when its easy to push small business owners around and play art critic for a few minutes? These assholes will have an aneurism if they realize that many commercial murals are also from time to time painted with cans, especially the touch ups to cover over the tag themselves.
