| | Re: Urban Exploration and Weapons <Reply # 220 on 5/1/2008 3:20 PM >
| | | Posted by micro I've seen traces of homeless people in some places I've explored, but have never thought anything of it, maybe because I don't subscribe to the belief that the homeless are violent criminals out to beat me up. Maybe if I get stabbed in the eye at some point, I'll change my tune, but I've never encountered any problems in the past so bringing "protection" with me has never once crossed my mind. Not even when I'm exploring places found in the "worst" areas of Buffalo.
|
Also, I have never, ever in my life seen a homeless person I didn't think I could outrun. The life they lead is simply (and obviously) incredibly hard on their bodies. They are not track stars. Even a relatively low level of fitness should see you easily outpacing some crazed hobo clutching a length of rebar, and if this isn't always the case, I'm stillbanking on the potential for happy outcomes from running being higher as a percentage than, say, bludgeoning said hobo to death on the spot.

| | | I've been doing this for 30+ years and have never felt the need to carry a weapon. The closest I came was when I had to quietly hide in the shadows for 15 minutes and wait out a gang of dipshit vandal teenagers who decided to show up and violently thrash the location I was exploring. (I bet they call themselves Urban Explorers too) They eventually got bored and drifted away. What would I have done with a weapon in this situation anyway? I've run across countless scrappers over the years. While we tend to be aware of each other's presence, we are both busy doing what we came there to do and neither of us wants a confrontation, hence it never happens. OTOH, I have had to talk to about 500 cops over the years and explain myself. I've never even been frisked because I carry plenty of evidence that I'm a photographer so I can defuse their suspicion quickly. If the cops DID find a pure weapon on me (as opposed to say, a big maglight or heavy duty tripod), I know for a fact they'd throw the book at me. Any credibility I had as being an innocent explorer / photographer is instantly lost. Even if you have a legal permit to pack, the cops will see a guy wandering abandoned buildings with a gun as someone just looking for trouble. Ditto any lock picking / housebreaking tools. The cops find you with those, you're going for a ride in their back seat. Period. This was all spelled out in Ninj's book as well, but it's really just common sense. Anyone caught by the cops carrying a weapon while doing UE gets what they deserve.

| | | To a point I agree with most of you, and even though I admit I carry, I've never run into anything dangerous. At the same time, It was only about a month or so ago that my friends were pretty freaked out by a few scrappers in the biggest abandonment local to me, and I'd rather be safe than sorry. As for the Commonwealth, yes, they require a permit, and I have the highest one. My reason is that I am a home owner, a business owner, have a relatively clean record, and for this state, that's plenty of a reason to give a permit. We'll see if I get any shit if and when it comes up, and I'll be happy to post my arrest report if there comes to be one.

I don't blame people for thier mistakes, but I do expect they pay for them. |

| | | Posted by Fitzcarraldo I train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so obviously all I need to bring is myself. My enemies will most certainly be mesmerized by my solid ground fighting skills long enough for me to armbar, triangle, RNC, kimura, and heel hook them into submission... in that order. I may even sink in a gogoplata or three. Then I'll go to the bar with all of their girlfriends for a celebratory drink. None of this strikes me as less than wholly feasible.

not to be rude, but true martial artists do not brag about what they know or what they'll do... and we never go out for a drink to celebrate fighting off a random attacker!
They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

BANG
no I am joking that is awesome (lol especially the bar part) but wearing a vest and carrying a large piece of bullet proof material would increase your chances as well.. don't forget if you throw something a persons head you can then use that time to jog to either side (if you hit them in the melon) and close the gap (people tend to fire wildly) and sieze said weapon to disarm (or possible shoot in arm) anyone else who is in room with a weapon. if they aren't firing running RIGHT at them is so much faster but your chances of being shot after the 2nd second or so increases 50% each second.. if you can throw more things at thier head and shield yourself while on your way over to them without it taking time to do so you will be able to get to them.. other than that.. reasoning is just as powerful.. because who the hell wants to shoot anyone =]

| | | If you think about it, anything can be used as a weapon. So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to bludgeon a crazed lunatic to death, be creative and just grab the nearest blunt object. Rocks, sticks, metal rods... guerilla warfare damnit. Who says you absolutely need a gun?

So don't get caught, right? Some locations need those things. I also want to point out all of the "it's illegal to do XYZ while urbexing" - it's illegal to trespass while urbexing too, but, you know... This hobby doesn't exactly attract those with a strong affinity for authority. And I've needed my weapon whilst out in an abandonment. Didn't need to use it as a weapon though. Or well, a lock-slipping, splinter extracting weapon. Hrah.
But srsly guise, someone needs to go on a mission dressed in full spartan gear. How cool would that be. And noone could arrest you, cause you could do a barrel roll over the cop car behind your shield. And then kick em in the chest. Edit: And WhereTF is blackhawk. He loved these threads.
