| | | In the summer of 2008, 10 of us decided to go on a 4 week canoe trip to Labrador. We went up a river, reached the height of land, and proceeded down another river. We took train which left from a small town in Quebec to our destination in Labrador. More on the train station another day. Anyway, after a 1km portage, assisted by a Caterpillar forklift, we loaded the canoes with our wanigans and departed to our first campsite. After about 1 week of traveling up river through our first lake system, we spotted a set of dark red cabins against the trees. Having so much time in front of us, we decided to go check them out.
As we approached, we saw pontoons which where used for the planes to land. We beached our canoes and went ahead exploring. Leading up to the cabins, there was a rotten wooden path which prevented from stepping into the swamp like ground. There where six cabins, each made of plywood painted red. The first cabin was bare with no sign. It looked like a storage shed. The next cabin read “Guest.” Inside, there were two bunk beds, and a toilet in the back room. Animal feces littered the ground, the bunks where broken, and nails where sticking out of everything. The next cabin was pretty small, and further back from the other cabins, labeled shower. Very modest accommodations, except they had the luxury of running water. We could not find the pump. Next over was the best building, the kitchen. Ill talk more about it later. Storage Cabin:
Guest and Kitchen cabin. Shower in background.
Kitchen and cooks cabin, you can kinda see the guide cabin in the background:
Over one more, the cook’s cabin. Inside was pretty nifty. Not only there was an old pair of homemade snowshoes, cards, tools, and other neat toys, but also a flyer describing the camp. It was a hunting camp. We estimate that the last year of operations was in 1994, since that’s the latest date we could find. Homemade Snowshoes:

Flyer:
Full sized image of flyer : http://dl.getdropb...RADOR/IMG_5196.JPG Apparently the “New management” didn’t work that well. The last cabin was the guides’ cabin. Same as the guests’ cabin, nothing interesting inside. Now the kitchen was the coolest part. Fully furnished with a table, it almost looks completely function. We ate lunch in there before heading out to climb the nearby esker.
A full gallery of all the pictures involved at full size can be found at : http://www.getdrop...108/1/UER?h=6337d7 Thank-you for reading. This is my first location post, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask any questions, either about this, or the trip itself. | | | That reminds me of a place we go to in the summer @ the top of Michigan. There was an old methodist summer camp there, abandoned cabins and mess hall, but the University of Michigan has a biology station there and bought the land. Good thing, too, someone would have eventually put a massive cottage on the land and who needs another of those? 2 caribou per hunter? Isn't shooting caribou like shooting cows? It's not like they are in any hurry to get anywhere.
You betcha |

Caribou can actually be quite fast, but very tasty too. The local natives which we meet in the last few days of the trip where kind enough to give fresh caribou and fish. It depends how you hunt them, and i think from a plane, is just unfair.

| | | unfortunately, we never came across those cabins. I'd be interested in seeing some of those. The next sign of civilization we saw (apar from the SARTEC helicopter when a kid broke his arm) was a cabin owned by a hunter. Thanks for reminding me though, ill post the meter station we passed later next week (exam dependent)

| | | I miss the Maritimes and long walks through the woods in my back yard. Great find. I'm going to have to check it out when I'm home this summer. Many thanks.
