Hobo Encounters?

back when i was in cali, i did an exploration at an old facility of a well known rehab and psycho center. the first time i went in, i went alone and unprepared. long story short, i ran into a section of the hospital that showed recent signs of habitation. seeing as to how i was alone, i hightailed it out of there.

my question is has anybody had an actual run- in with a hobo? how did it turn out?
what would be your best advice on how to deal with the situation?

i ran into a few of them once they were content to let me be. i asked if it was ok if i looked around and took pictures he said he didn't own the building.

not all hobos are going to try and steal from you and hurt you.

i don't smoke but if you think your going to be encountering a lot of hobos it's a good peace offering.

F this I"m going exploring!

I guess it depends if they are "singing hobos" or "stabbing hobos"

I guess it really depends on who you run into, someone like a squatter or a large PCP smoking rapetastic man.

I've ran into a homeless man near the entrance of a drain once, but he just gave me the "peace" sign and I continued. Just be cautious I suppose.

I have not smoked cigarettes for many years. But a pack of smokes is always in by backpack for this very reason. As a teen, I hopped trains a couple of times, and on my first time I met a rather friendly hobo who was more than willing to share some of his stories. He suggested that if one wanted to make sure thay always stayed on the good side of his type, carry a pack of smokes with you and offer them a cig while asking to roam on their turf. most of the time, this is more than sufficient to get to go cool places with out pissing off the "locals".

In practice, this has worked with every hobo or bum I've ever encountered while exploring. Most of the time when you start talking to them, they will tell you about other places that you would have probably never found on your own. If you really want to thank them, on the way out, give 'em the rest of the pack, this also works if they accept the cig earlier but are still reluctant to let you see "their" place. Remember, home is where the heart is, and for hobos, you are in their home.

Cheers and Happy Xplorin.
