| | Teens get stuck in bridge escapade < on 8/25/2007 1:18 AM >
| | | Two teen girls who caused a major headache for the city's emergency services yesterday are facing charges of criminal mischief, say police. Cops allege the pair, aged 16 and 17, took three days to plan their scramble onto a service scaffold beneath the Capilano Bridge last night, but neglected to consider what might happen if they got stranded there. That's exactly what happened around 6:30 p.m. yesterday. Police and firefighters arrived to find two girls had climbed onto the scaffold, engaged the pulley system and were halfway across the underside of the bridge, over the river, when the scaffold got stuck. The stranded girls were spotted by a dog-walker. "They had a backpack of water and had planned to go on an adventure," said a visibly upset police Sgt. Chris Epler. "It was not the most well-conceived plan and we don't take it lightly. If anything had gone wrong, firefighters would have had to risk their lives rappelling off the bridge to get to them." After the rescue, the girls were flippant - teasing their hair for news cameras and asking police if they "really" had to get into the back of a cruiser - but they got the message once they were handcuffed and read their rights, Epler said. He said the girls were able to engage the scaffold's pulley system because it was not properly secured by city workers. "There was a padlock on it, but it was left unlocked," Epler said. Fire crews verbally coached the girls on how to use the pulley system to bring themselves back to the bridge's edge, which they did by 7 p.m. Fire captain Darrell Payne said it's not within the emergency services mandate to bill foolish people when crews are forced to rescue them. "We're not really set up to do a cost analysis of anything other than major fires," he said. "You normally don't want people counting costs in the middle of a rescue anyway." But Payne said a billing system for obviously preventable rescues or dangerous goods spills has been debated by city council before. "They just haven't ever come to an agreement on it. It's not an easy thing to do, there's a lot of grey areas."

| | | That's North Van stupid chicks for you. Not really shocked by this one.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | I'm going to assume this incident is from Edmonton's Capilano bridge- which has a mobile scaffold underneath it. How do I know this? Because I've been on it, but had the good sense not to try and travel underneath the bridge. Lotta effort, it's a long bridge. I wonder how exactly they managed to get stuck halfway?
