Ok not much more to say, Like Blackbird says the less your seen the better and as for the gas mask the main reason I'm getting it is because it will protect against asbestos and other "Bad Shit" in these places. Better safe than sorry. So were done here.

I could be wrong so feel free to correct me.. But aren't military type NBC masks not all that great for asbestos since most are reactive for agents and whatnot?

You know, I think you're right. I might look into a P100 anyway, thanks for reminding me about that. They may not be good for asbestos but they would be good for chemical fumes; most chemicals are filter out using activated charcoal and this type of filter has this. Still, it's one of those retarded things that people collect just to say they have it. [last edit 5/24/2007 10:03 PM by Blackbird - edited 1 times]

| | | Yep, to my knowledge most military mask filters are designed for NBC threats and not meant for most small particulate matter, such as asbestos, so they'd do jack against the things you want to protect yourself against. I used to use a surplus set of ALICE gear, although with all the conciousness on homeland security it tends to get a strange look from people, especially in public places. More recently I've just been sticking with a cheap backpack I picked up from REI. Holds an SLR bag plus flashlight, batteries, coat, respirator, etc easily, and is pretty comfortable to boot. | | | I was readin up somewhere and the filters for the masks I found were about equal to a P95 mask.. So thats not 'too' bad..

| | | How good is a P95? What is it rated for? I don't really know that much about the filter "ranking" system, I just know about some of this useless NBC shit.

| | | Personally, I'd much rather just get a normal respirator that can use a P100 filter, and then buy some activated charcoal cartridges if I plan on going anywhere that has dangerous chemicals. That will give you equal or better protection, and I'm sure it would be more comfortable to boot. That's the practical solution.

| | | I have a P100 but I don't know how to change the filters. My friend works at a hardware store and they found the one I got out of it's package (someone must have been trying to steal it) so they were going to throw it out. He brings it home one day and trades it for the crappy one that I had. How do you usually change the filters on yours; I could use some suggestions for this 'cause its pissing me off a little bit.

Try twisting the cartridges counterclockwise. That's how mine come off. It's a 6000 series 3M respirator that my dad used to use for gypsum drywall, half face.

| | | I tried that but it didn't work. On th cover for the exhale valve it says "Workhorse" and above that on the rubber mask it has a big "M", it also says 9500 somewhere on the mask, I forget where though. I'm only calling it a P100 because I was told it was a P100. Is it just the filters that are P100 and the mask has a model number? Anyhow I'm looking around on the web and my friend is going to see about getting me the manual for this type. Thanks for the help though.

| | | Yeah, on topic, I've been wanting a smaller pack, so I just went to a sporting goods store today and picked up a bag on sale.
Not bad for $30, and I'll probably use it for outdoorsy stuff as well as exploring, as long as I don't get asbestos all over it.

The dryzone is a beautiful thing. If I had it to do over again I probably would have bought it. The reason I didnt is that it was really hard to zip the bag, but the truth is that the regular rover is just as hard to zip. zipping the camera compartment is the ONLY problem with the bag...just the way it's designed it pulls a bit and makes it hard. Yellow on the dryzone also sucks. I actually realized I needed less camera storage than my expedition 5, and more open storage. So right now in the camera area I carry my 20D with a standard zoom lens on it, another standard zoom lens, another body, 4 filters in their cases, and I have one slot open that I'll put my angle finder in, or maybe stuff the cable release in if I want to leave it on the camera. You can get another lens in there though The open pocket at the top is nice and big...in there I have a resp, a lens hood for my 24-70, spare batteries, spare film, my tripod head, water, and miscellaneous garbage. The floor of that pocket is velcroed in, for reasons unknown to me, so it can sag if you put a lot of weight in there (I hang my tripod head by its bag in the pocket). Then it's got the laptop pocket for....whatever. One of the best things is the tripod support. It will take a reasonable sized tripod and keep it low enough to climb around and get under low doorway openings around roof stairs and stuff. I leave my tripod head on and put it on the bag and it's fine.

| | | Thanks for the rundown, good stuff to know. The one I saw here was all black, no yellow, but I've seen those rain slicker bags, and I wouldn't want to walk around with that. I just wish they'd design these with the option of hanging the tripod on the side of the bag instead of the back. BTW, don't know if you noticed, but that's not a Canon in the picture you posted.

| | | Yeah, that's the bag I use. It's alright. The only thing I hate is the support system for the tripod which gets really annoying when you need to take it on and off quickly. It's good in theory, but two or three velcro straps would be so much better. I also have problems getting down manholes or caged ladders when the tripod's attached so I think I'm either going to modify things or look around for a bag that secures the tripod to the side. Oh yeah, and the other elastic chords have a tendency to dangle and get caught on things like fences. Do yourself a favour and remove any of the ones you don't need.
