| | Abandoned mining town in Northern Quebec < on 4/3/2007 4:28 PM >
| | | I am exploring the site of a closed down mine in Northern Quebec... The mine closed down operation 3 years ago and the surrounding town has been partially deconstructed. Recent (< 2 years) satellite images show that some structures remain. I am currently in Montreal and will be going to the town of Val d'Or on or around April 12th and then proceeding further North to this site. Anyone interested in coming along send PM.

| | | Grrrrr... what frustration. Old satellite images are full of lies. These are the coordinates of the site I went to explore, formerly the mine-site/town of Joutel. It is located just inside the Baie-James municipal boundary bordering Abitibi-Temiscamingue. The road to the mine-site has been closed off and has a sign indicating that it is no longer being maintained by the department of transportation it was un-drivable due to the snow but may, otherwise be in good condition. I have been to this mine while it was operating in 1994 and satellite images no less than 5 years old showed some remaining structures. However, upon arrival I discovered that both the mine and the town had been completely razed to the ground. The only remaining indications of civilization were: a single powerline (disconnected from the grid), a dumpster full of rubble and the "welcome to joutel" sign, a rusty testament to joutel. This place doesn't warrant a location in the DB, since there is nothing there, but in case anyone is curious about exactly where it is these are the coordinates: 49 deg 27 min 37 sec North 78 deg 18 min 30 sec West
