| | Calling all metal detecting prospectors < on 4/4/2007 7:53 PM >
| | | How many of you out there love urban exploration but love to metal detect at a lot of the sites you go to. A lot of my research on places to explore are also places I can break out the metal detector and find some hidden treasures.

| | | I think it would be kinda fun to try do it. Problem is with most places you don't want to be caught outside. Other places the land is just so overgrown I don't see it as easy, but more like impossible to do. There was one hospital that had some hidden courtyards that I am sure would have yielded some awesome finds. If I had a metal detector, there are a few places I would definitely try it. I've heard people find some amazing stuff doing it. Out of the 1000's of people on this board, there has to be at least one or two people that have done it.

| | | I do a ton of metal detecting. Got a White's Spectrum XLT a few years ago, and I have found coins, buttons, buckles, gold nuggets, jewelry and more. I do most of my detecting at ghost towns and old mines, but I'll bet it would be great at the proper urban location.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | I have been entertaining the idea of getting a detector for under water exploration. And my dad has been trying to get me into gold panning. I really like detecting and exploring where there is a story behind it. (looking to go on the almighty treasure hunt)

| | | I've been prospecting for around 15yrs. I'm in the vampire state(NY), where the taxes are so high...even the minerals left!. btw, 30° is perfect for pounding rocks. In addition to what i have in the table, there are a few hundred pounds of rough in the attic..it's a bad addiction...there is NO CURE! GV

| | | I usually go metal detecting in Da UP. We've found quite a bit of copper in the old rockpiles in the Keweenaw. I've done some detecting in NoVA and found a few civil war relics. Nothing exciting, just a bullet and a button. My buddy found a confederate archer shell once!! That was a sweet find.

I was just talking about trying to find some copper in the UP. Price of copper is up. How much copper do you usually find in a day trip. [last edit 4/5/2007 7:58 PM by silvernail - edited 1 times]

| | | It depends on the rock pile and how lucky you are. Plus the fact that you need a way to get the copper out of the poor rock. Next time I'm at my folks, I'll take a few pics of what we've found.

| | | How much money does an average metal detector cost? There are some historic ruins and stuff near my house, and I've been dying to metal detect it for years. I'm quite poor though, so I've never been able to afford purchasing a metal detector.

| | | As Jons said, a good detector can be much cheaper. the garret 150 is only 150$. And there are many other good units in the 150-250 range. GV
