| | | None that we have found in 5 years of looking. There have been a bunch of hospitals tho, (Camsell, Belcher, Childrens) but nothing much right now. The Camsell is mostly gutted now. It had power and was abandoned (save for the onsite guard) for many years. There were a few buildings on the grounds of the asylum in Red Deer but the rest of the campus is still active. The biggest asylums in Alberta are still in use.
If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :) |

| | | Is the Red Dear Michener Centre still in use? It used to be called the "Provincial Training School for Mental Defectives". A lot of messed up stuff happened in there. I think its still standing.

| | | It is still standing, and mostly active. I don't have all the specs, but the oldest part of it is under renovation. The main asylum part is farther north and there's only one main road to access it, from the best of my knowledge. I was gonna scout it out, cause apparently there's a few in-active buildings around it, but I refrained cause it looked like there was only authorized traffic allowed to access. I did scout the part under renovation a bit. Not sure how night security is though. My mom used to work at the Michener Center about 20 years ago. She said that about half of it is in-active, but most likely used for storage. I doubt any of it is easily accessable, but I'm still working on the details. Perhaps someone knows more? I'll keep posted once I get around to going back there for another scout.

Crazy. It'd be kind of interesting to be able to get a peek in there. I've been studying sterilization in BC and Alberta recently, and just watched "The Sterilization of Leilani Muir" yesterday. Its pretty gruesome what the government did and got away with for years. (It was done regularly under the Sexual Sterilization Act until 1972.) Thanks. =)

| | | The oldest part of the Michener Centre is under renovation because it suffered from massive damage due to a fire, so they are in the midst of trying to repair it. I believe it was a protected historical site, otherwise it was damaged to the point where they would have torn it down if it had been any other ordinary building. You can go onto the grounds for a stroll without suspicion during the day so that might be the best time to go and look.

| | | I think that redux, riotnrrd and myself are the only folks who ever made it in and out without being caught. For a long time, there was active security on the oldest building site who would park outside the building in a car so entry was nearly impossible. After a REALLY quick run around the main floor and basement, we had been quite obviously noticed. We made an exit via the steam tunnel system about 150' from the building, just in time to see the RCMP pull up and sit with the seccers and stare at the building. Didn't hang around long enough to find out what would happen... Last I heard, the renovations had finally received provincial funding, and then I moved away from Red Deer.
