| | | Hey everybody - the missus and I spent the day driving about and checking out some places - went to one that I haven't seen mentioned on here and another that pretty much everybody has been to. Without further ado, pictures: Location 1:

| | | I am a huge fan of the second location you went to. It was actually my very first UE. As someone once told me, its a great place to get your UE feet wet. =)
Just curious... what kind of camera are you using?
Here is one I took myself at your second location. Looks like the flower has been replaced with a water bottle.

| | | Darn - I prefer the flower to the bottle. The main camera I use is a Nikon D50, this time with a new lens, the Nikon 18-70mm (D70 kit lens). I thought it performed really well - it just needs new places to take pictures of now

Awesome. I actually took that one with a Sony Cybershot 2.0 megapixel... but the camera I just got is a Nikon D-50. Yay for DSLR's!!!

| | | lol 2Xplorations - I couldn't help it... earlier in the day before leaving town we went to the Army/Navy surplus place and they had a whole case of them for only $30. Taking that picture was the only time I wore it (except for the drive to the locations... the looks on fellow driver's faces was awesome). Happiedaze - congrats on the D50 - they're great bodies. All of my digital b&w images are done in post-processing, not in-camera. I just set the camera on Aperture Priority (-0.3 to -0.7 exposure compensation depending on lighting) and let it figure out the rest.

| | | Nice job, I'm not sure but I think that grain silo has been half abandoned for a while but it seems like there was always something going on in a different section of it. I also have a bit of a gas mask collection myself. I've lost count but I think I've got something like 30 different kinds. Right now I have some of them on display on top of the cabinets in my kitchen. If I'm not mistaken, that mask you have Duncan is actually from the Czech Republic, not that it's far away. If it's the one I'm thinking I don't have it either. Pretty cool.

What Surplus store is this? As a hobby along with UE I also collect gas masks....I have many some new, some used...WWII, Recent....all kinds. Now when you say whole case for $30....do you mean a case of the smae mask, or do they toss in a mixture of different masks? Did they have any others? THANKS!

| | | swankfive - nice pictures, I really like the lightplay on the first with the steps. Massive location - hard to grasp just by seeing pictures. BGv2.0 - the Army/Navy surplus store here in Greenville - and they're $30/ea., not $30 for the entire case :p They had about 10 different kinds or so. I might go back and see what other ones they have.

| | | It is big – so big I can't help but wonder if it's the same place - I was pleased with that shot, thanks for the kudos. I'm bad about relying too heavily on post production but with that shot I wanted to get as much of it right on camera that I could, so I'm extra pleased with it. I think I had to do a little cropping to get it straight, and that's it. Same with the second shot - I've never had good luck getting blue sky like that, but the light, time of day, etc, etc was all going my way, I guess.

| | | When you were out on your second location, did you happen to notice the property just north of it, on the other side of the old Spag. Warehouse building that they are re-doing? Looks like the place shut down in the last year or so, but there was a lot of high fence and barbed wire - seemed a high-risk entry - but I can't help but wonder if it's worth it.

| | | Actually yeah, we did notice the property by the 2nd location - it was already dark by the time we were finished though, and wanted to get out of that area pretty quickly... somewhat scary. I'm not sure if it's the same place - here are a couple of other pictures:

| | | Nope, not the same place. Oddly similar setup, though. The location I was at is east of Hemphill and south of downtown, but it's close to a rail yard. The second area is creepy. I haven't been in the "compound" in probably, crap, 10 years. I rode through on my mountain bike (it was much easier to get into than it is now - not that it's all that hard) and didn't stick around long. There's something oddly violent about that place (not trying to make a quip either, considering what the place was). It's eery. That other location in the area looks nice. I tend to look for industrial places for photography, and I can't help but wonder if it's worth the trouble. I was able to scope it out from the east and found a reasonably safe place to ditch a vehicle and hoof it in from that direction. I couldn't do much "scouting" - there was a police car hovering around the area, had my son with me, etc, etc. Coming in from the west is just asking for trouble; north, too. The south side is exposed, but I'm not sure what the potential is for entry. With my luck, if I don't get in there soon, they'll tear it down before I can.
If you're not against me, don't cross this line. If yes, do. |
