| | | Got a chance last weekend to visit the abandoned Cherokee Nuclear Project. After a bit of a hard time initially finding it and discovering a way in, it was an awesome visit. The pictures do it no justice. It's freaking huge! I got plenty more pictures, and plan on going back later this month for more. It's an incredible site.

| | | Duke Power never finished construction. Most of the site preparation work is done, and the concrete containment vessel is partially completed, but due to rising costs and lower than estimated demand, work was stopped in 1983. NY Times had an article about it: http://query.nytim...A05757C0A965948260 Never went critical because there was no core to go critical with. | | | hey, i just saw your pics of the nuclear plant. they were great. i would like to get directions from you, if that's ok. and any resistance you may have encountered. i am from belmont. i am kind of new to this exploration thing but it is very exciting for some reason. i told my wife about the old nuke plant and how i would like to go. she said "why would you want to do that?" she does'nt understand. any way anything you could give me would be a great help. thanks

| | | Man, I thought they demolished it after we did our exploration(http://www.abandonedsc.com/abyss) Good thing they didn't.
It never went active, but they are scheduled to build a new one there anytime now.

| | | Was there any security there? We saw the old man pass us by in his Ford Ranger every 28 minutes. He nearly ran us over and didn't even see us!

When I was there, the only people I saw were two workers keeping the pumps running. They have half a dozen pumps set up to keep the place dry. If you look at the images from Google Earth, you'll see the whole place flooded, mostly from rain water, but also due to the cooling pond surrounding the containment vessel and turbine generator pits. When I was leaving, I drove around front to get a picture of the sign out there, and I did see a white pickup sitting inside the gate, but didn't see a security guy.

The new one won't be started anytime before late 2008, but they are already making preparations as far as site work goes. They have a lot of hoops to jump through before they get all their licenses and such. They have started soil and groundwater testing, and an evaluation of the existing structures, though.

I'm kind of hesitant to post here exactly where it is, but if you use Google Earth, or even Google Maps, you should be able to easily find it. That's how I came across it. If you still can't find it and are really interested in going, send me an email

| | | I went there long long time ago. We fucking snuck in at night, down a 4 wheeler path due to all the people who had gotten busted before us. When we got there not one person was even in the area. You could barely tell houses were remotely nearby. Then Scagg goes in couple months later owning the place. I guess I have to do everything the hard way. Yeah Sueplex should have gone there. I would have liked to have seen that place in the day.
