| | | As its fast approaching its 20th anniversary of "Black Friday" 31 July 1987, the Edmonton Tornado, heres some hints for the more adventurous people, that I was able to dig up http://www.iassist.../tornado/new1a.JPG Photo Taken near Refinery Row, (from Strathcona Science Park or Rundle Park.) http://www.iassist...ornado/photo12.JPG Aftermath of the F4 scale tornado; Where the tank landed upside down in 1987 was ripped up and flown around (skipped around for 170 meters around its horizontal axis), off Baseline/101 Avenue N.W. & 34th Street N.W., by Esso Strathcona Refinery, Alberta Truss. Estimated minimum wind speed required to cause the tumbling of the empty oil tank at the abandoned Texaco refinery was 200 km/h. http://www.iassist...ornado/chapt4.html CBC News Archive of the report, WMV, 4:30 http://archives.cb...es/tornadoes/clip8
GPS/Google Earth Cords: 53°32'24.57"N 113°23'15.06"W Admin Buildings? 53°32'26.13"N 113°22'50.91"W ~ where the tank was?
I have does some digging and I think Imperial Oil [ExxonMobil]now owns the site, but as far as I could tell, from the last few seasons the Admin buildings and the buildings to the East (West of where the tank was) seem to be empty/abandoned, just from precursory drive-bys off baseline (is amazing what a observant passenger can see, LOL) but I my self haven't been on the property. just inquisitive researching and, a keen knack for urban/civic history. hope this helps the Vet UER's, as hell, I'm just a simple rookie/newbie does this gain me any brownie points? LOL

| | | The refinery is old news. What you may not realize is how large the plant used to be, even in 1976. Demolition got to it long before the tornado, and continues to pick at the few remaining buildings.

When did it close, do you happen to know? I would suspect that it spanned farther south, was it not (I'm Guessing here the old McColl-Frontenac refinery? opened around 1951? (texaco swallowed 'em I think...))
