| | Converting a 4D Maglite to LED < on 8/9/2006 4:34 PM >
| | | Is there any cheap and easy way to do this? The incandescent bulb it came with just isn't bright enough. I checked http://www.pocketlights.com/ledbulbs.asp, but the quoted prices are more than I actually paid for the light in the first place. Suggestions welcome!

| | | Go to Walmart they have the LED upgrade for 18 bucks. Its drops right in just like any other bulb. Make sure you buy the one that is specifically for the 4D model.

| | | Anyone used this conversion kit? I'm curious how it stands up to a modded 4D.

| | | I just bought the 3-D LED maglite. I didn't have to convert anything, it just came that way. They sell them at WALMART for around $30. I also found a ton of shit that i needed whilst getting lost looking for the maglites. They have some great deals there.

| | | My boyfriend and I just bought LED head lights (to wear on your head not for the car) at CDN Tire for like $25. Incidently my photography job on the side is for the company who makes the LED lights.

| | | -You can buy a 2 pack of 3AAA LED flashlights @ Sam's for $25. -The replacement LED bulb for a 4-cell runs $13-$18 depending upon what WalMar's pricepoint is where you live. You can probably pay more and purchase it elsewhere if you despise WalMart or do not live near one. -It works just fine for me, no complaints. LED produces light on a different wavelength than incandescent light.

Get the 2D Maglite with LED. The 4D isn't all that much brighter. The difference is the runtime and the 2D has more than enough runtime for just about any exploration you'll do at once. (about 20 hours on 2D batteries).

| | | You can get an LED streamlight for like $10 more. IMO it's much brighter.

| | | If your at Wal-Mart anyways, screw Maglites. Pick up a Dorcy "METAL"... they are basically LED Surefire knockoffs, but they are really bright, durable, and take AAA batteries. Much better than a Mag any day. I love mine, I have two. They are $15 at any walmart. [last edit 8/10/2006 9:19 PM by Louie - edited 1 times]

That is far from very bright.

and see what a real flashlight is... Batteries are somewhat expensive (CR123x2) but you get 10 times what a led light gives you and the light is yellowish so it makes better light painting than a led light. It's also great to focus your camera in the dark without using a flash

I have something like that. Not very useful. Unnecessarily bright, lame runtime from expensive batteries. For night time exploration, you usually want something just enough to let you see by with minimal impact on your night vision.

| | | Some leds are now getting 60- 80 luemens which is in range of tactical lights - maglite conversion is a 3 watt led - gets about 60. Very bright very long lasting and tight focus less "spillage" Is heavier and larger but I would rather have nice size, tough light

Maglite LED runs very hot. It dims down to around 40% the original output in the first five minutes and stays there to keep itself from melting down. Very long lasting, but its HUGE.

| | | i have a mini-mag light which i converted to LED about a year and a half ago and it's still running on the same batteries! that's the nice thing about LED lights...you get fat fat burn time and long lasting battery life. the down side with LED's is they can't really compete with a nice strong incandescent in terms of beam throw. LED's are good for short distance flooding (which is most of what i need my light for) but there are times when i'm doing infil in completely dark environment and the darkness just swallows up my LED beam. times like this i bust out the high power incandescent to cut through the darkness. there are plenty of good LED makers out there. for a good incandescent i would go with surefire or scorpion, they're worth the money.

| | | No brainer here; as usual in the same Walmart you can buy a Mag LED conversion for 8 bucks, and it is not battery specific. As for other lights, I was in Target the other day and was pretty impressed with the Inova line of LED light systems, all made in the USA.
