| | How to shut a dog up. < on 8/14/2006 5:57 PM >
| | | As I mentioned recently in another post: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=34675 My ue last night was cut short by the presence of dogs. I heard many but only saw one. Goin' on what I saw and heard, it's safe to assume these dogs are all leashed. Most of the threads on this site are about attack prevention or avoidance, but what I'd really like to do is just shut the dog up. I don't wanna kill it so that option is out, please don't bother suggesting it. Any other ideas would be great. I'm thinking maybe bribery(food) or drugging and muzzling(the owner can take the muzzle off in the morning and keep it as a "present"). Any other ideas that I'm missing? I'm not ready to give up on this location yet.

| | | Just toss a nice juicy piece of meat or a whole bag of dog treats to it. Not only will it probably shut up but it might start to like you.

Yeah, day old meat works. I'd stay away from putting sleeping powder on it, though, as I'm unsure of it's LD50, and how it would affect a canine. however, you could always rub the meat with a little special k, since it's a veterinary tranquilizer anyway.

I wouldn't leave the muzzle, you will never be able to go back again. If you're drugging, which is odd to begin with, take your muzzle when you leave. Leave no signs that you've ever been there and you won't have to worry about increased security when you go back.
Leave only footprints, take only pictures... unless its like really cool. |

| | | I would question the validity of giving the dog a steak. Has anyone had first hand experience with this ? Personally I would consider distracting the dogs by getting someone to stand on the outside of the fence, and taunting the dog. I seem to get the impression dogs tend to enjoy barking at people outside a fence, and this gives the opportunity for a second intruder to enter the premises. Now this is all theory. I really have no idea how well it'd work.

| | | Come on people... This is easy. Peanut butter sandwiches. WAY cheaper than steak. Use lots of PB, and hold off on the jelly or jam. Bonus -- raw meat in your backpack is suspicious, but a couple of sandwiches look totally innocent.

| | | I've got a couple of very loud dogs. When they start barking incessantly I've found that bribing them with treats or cheese [or pieces of cooked meat if you can deal with touching the stuff] works well. They can't bark if they've got their mouth full of food. I'd stay away from any animal tranquilizers though. Their effects are generally short acting [2-4 hours] and the dosages are dependant on weight. Also, with some tranquilizers, the difference between an anesthetic dose and a lethal dose is small. The one relatively safe [for use when the animal's weight is unknown and the dosage is uncertain]animal tranquilizer is "ace" otherwise know as Acepromazine maleate. It reduces anxiety but wil not put the animal out completely. Bribes/treats work well in general though. edit: word choice [last edit 8/14/2006 7:18 PM by nonsum - edited 1 times]

| | | yeah, peanut butter sandwiches are a great idea, just get some for both ways, in and out, and you should be fine. yeah, i'd be a little hesitant about drugging the animals too, but I figured a veterinary tranquilizer would have an established margin between ed and ld50's.

| | | It might not be a bad idea just to move on to the next spot...I have a dog and I would flip my toque (or beanie for my American friends) if I found out that someone was messing with her. Not that I'm a tough guy, but it's kind of like a boundary you don't cross-like spanking another peron's child. I have yet to come across a site that's worth the trouble of making elaborate schemes to get in.

| | | you make a very good point, monty, but alas, I have a sedentary job. One which gives me ample time to hypothesize about what one would do in such a situation. That being said, I wouldn't like anybody messing with my dogs, but these sound like guard dogs, not pets. That and a peanut butter sandwich wouldn't be too bad.

Maybe that dog likes you and wanted to save your life after reading this thread: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=34688 The best way to get a dog to shut up is to leave the property. The dog has every right to be there and is protecting the place like it's supposed to, while the only reason you would be on that property is to explore.
There are are many other places to explore. [last edit 8/15/2006 12:53 AM by rainman8889 - edited 1 times]

| | | You could try doing the Crocodile Dundee thing ;) As far as chocolate goes, I've heard that it's very bad for dogs, but what does it actually do? My last dog ate tons of chocolate and nothing ever happened. Not that we just fed her chocolate. She loved that stuff and would do anything to get to it. Many an easter basket was found empty the next day, and then there's the time we gave my grandpa a 2 lb box of chocolate and he left in on the coffee table when we went to dinner...
I haven't lost my mind. It's backed up on disk somewhere. |

this is the best option. if the dog starts to like you then it can also be a big help. it will protect you from any other dangers aswell. also, if you can drug a poor doggie, you are a cruel asshole and I should drug and muzzle you and see how you like it. So ya, you could be nice and make some new puppy friends or be an asshole who is cruel to animals.
