| | Rat Portage Lumber Co. mill < on 8/10/2006 12:30 AM >
| | | This is all that is left of the Rat Portage Lumber Company mill that was built in the early years of the 20th century. It was a beast in its day, but the boiler room was the only part made out of cement, and the rest being wooden is long gone. The size of the structure is important because it was too big for the timber rights available in the area, and only operated for a few years before shutting down. The boiler room and the general store museum are the only remaining buildings from Harrison Mills' boom phase, as all the row houses, elevated boardwalks and various other buildings were wooden as well. Anyone who is looking for nice pictures of this structure should make a trip in the spring or fall because the greenery is too dense in the summer. I had some focus issues, but that's mostly because I haven't learned my camera.

| | | From what I have been able to find out, the Rat Portage co. was mostly in the Harrison area, and companies like the abernethy Lougheed lumber co were in the stave lake, Alouette lake area (before and after the lakes were made). I've seen old pics of a Climax, (ya, Climax!) steam locomotive that crashed into Harrison Lake. Some great history around here.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | I don't know about the other companies but Rat Portage was definitely Harrison. They showed up here from Manitoba, ended up losing a tonne of money, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was there last effort in the province. Reading today I found out the mill was only open for a grand total of two years after construction (which took 6 or so years) was completed.
