if i was you i probably would stay away from Shireland in less you are absolutely sure you wont get caught. That place has seemed to tighten up its security recently. I just drove past it the other day and was shocked to see how many no tresspassing signs, and Notices there were. Like hundreds of them, every where on the fence perimeter. Ive been there 3 times, each time i went back it kept seeming like someone was keeping an eye on the joint cuz there would be more signs and things boarded up each time we went. But now, jeeze, EVERY building has a sign on it, and if youve been to that place theres alot of little buildings spread out all over the place. Each of them had a no tresspass, and a "NOTICE" and a you will be prosecuted to fullest extent notice, i mean who ever owns it is serious. Every window, door was boarded up. Even the front gate, there used to be a hole where you could easily slip in through, now has bars welded in place. I wouldnt doubt they have the alarms setup again either. Who ever it is they are trying to scare away or something. Just giving you a heads up man, it is a very very interesting place, ive been to it enough to make it not worth it to go back in now, but it is in the process of demolition, Kane county has cracked down on the owner to level it, and probably will soon either be new houses or maybe another park. So see it now while you can, just make sure nobodys there and you should be fine. Have fun.

| | | I believe (unless i'm thinking of someone else) that chuck has spoken to the owner, and can attest that he is a little...umm....'off'? He has had a few public freakouts.

Leo1: You cant just wander around Gary going into old buildings! Theres plenty of crackheads that will bust you in the mouth for that camera, then run a train your ladyfriends. Me: I like Gary, I think its nice, aside from the lack of eats on a Sunday afternoon. Leo2: Yeah, its really nice...until we find three dead strangers in an...abandoned...thing. |

| | | You have to think of it this way. Its right off of I-90 so anyone can see it from the highway. Im sure they have had a lot of people sneaking around on the property. What was so interesting about it anyways? Wasnt it just a horse farm?

| | | yeah the original owner and creator, Tom Smrt, was a little off you could say. Ive read hes got a 4th grade education, but made millions off a spray paint invention, he owns this company http://www.foxpaint.com. So with all that money he built shireland, because he loved the Shire horse bread. Yeah a total flop, barely open 2 seasons, was supposed to be family oriented place and another substitute to Great America. Its funny because in one of those huge storage buildings along I-90, where the Shireland sign/display board stands, was like a storage for all his spray cans. There were hundreds of boxes of spray paint everywhere, and of course everything is tagged, because he provided free paint for vandals..But recently a new owner took over the land, and from recent news articles it seems like the county is cracking down on him to level the land because of all the complaints they've recieved

| | | I actually knew some of the Smrts before they moved to california. Never been to Shireland but I have been to the abandoned fuse factory in Huntley, as well as the toy factory, and other places. I would like to know more places in northen illinois as well!
