|  | | | Can someone tell me what this is? It is clearly visible from the freeway that runs next to it, and if it's not obvious from the picture, it's very deep and sometimes filled with water. My friend said it was some kind of flood control, what do you guys think? Also, this is in Houston if you're wondering.

| | | | yeah looks like flood control for the highway, during heavy rain itll all drain in there. here in dallas, we use massive underground chambers called the Cole Park Detention Vaults for that.

| | | | Yeah, I read the thread on the detention vaults. What kinda drains do you think this thing leads to? I see at least two inlets in the picture. Also, what kind of risk would be taken if one explored this, assuming that security etc is not present? Would water flow into the drains be unpredictable and dangerous? Keep in mind that it rains fairly often here.

| | | | Try zooming out 1-2 levels and see if there is a logical place fot that water to go. Assuming its some sort of a holding pond or silting basin, it has to go somewhere. If you see a larger channel or river, look for the outfall from you basin.
I suppose it could also be more of an industrial use pond, possibly for cooling. What are the nearby businesses? That might hold a clue. Interesting stuff.

| | | | I'd say it wouldnt be worth it. You're probably looking at basically a big box canyon. Think swimming pool, except probably not chlorinated, and thus really nasty.

| | | | Yeah... It's in an industrial area filled with warehouses and some manufacturing companies. I wasn't really considering going in, but the thing has been bugging the hell out of me ever since I noticed it several years ago and wondered WTF.

| | | | Man I think I remember this place. I didn't live too far from there. I don't think this is flood control, and more likely its water being used by one of the nearby industries. If I recall correctly, Houston just diverted most of the rainwater into ditches that led to the various bayous. You might try Googling the address of the big factory on the right of the picture, and that might give you a better idea of what that water is being used for.
As far as getting inside drainage in Houston, dude that's risky. The water table there is only a couple of feet down, and it rains like hell all the time. You could find yourself in a world of shit if things went even slightly wrong.
