I figured out what's wrong with life: It's other people. |

It's very likely that your school's firewall blocks the port that AvChat uses. Websites usually use port 80, chat uses port 6374 (if I'm not mistaken).

Nah, it's an hour and 15 minutes and the work is rediculously easy. I've got a 98 in this class and I finish all the assigned class work in the first half an hour.. so I've got the rest of the period to dick around.

| | | As the UER resident teacher - get your wanna-be-chatting-something, DIO listening rear-end to work. Chats are filtered. There is a giant list of \'approved\' websites that goes out to all school IT folks - things like chat, forums, email, etc, are blocked. But alas, I have been using www.pr0xy.org to get my UER fill during school hours (of course I give my kids huge projects that keep them busy for days so I can read wonderful threads such as this one). Chat still does not work with it, but I can browse the forums and read my PMs. Anyway, I am sure they will eventually catch on to pr0xy.org.

| | | I couldn't use the chat at school either. The port it uses is either blocked or flash isn't installed. Its probably the first of those. Not really any way around it...

| | | I registered for UER at my highschool - and was on every day [I had an office in a TV studio anyway] so my school never acknowledged the existence of UE as a bad thing [boy would I have bitched if they blocked it - or reset the password on the firewall and unblocked it]. Chat worked too, ironically enough. My highschool was small enough, and hick enough that kids would be stopped chatting simply by blocking myspace and AIM. They do have google chat blocked now though. ExplorerH - you seem like an awesome teacher lol. Not sure what level you teach but do you have students privy to other side of your life? ~G

heh, it was actually a student who turned me onto this site. www.uer.ca/forum_s...id=1&posterid=1051 last I spoke with him, he was setting out to ride his 20" BMX around the world. then there was www.uer.ca/forum_s...id=1&posterid=8815 I don't mention it anymore, for reasons like Ark. If a student was cool, and a good student, like the one who brought me here (Carrok), and they came to me about it, I'd probably discuss it with them.

| | | Lexisaurus, As a teacher-in-training who is constantly tutoring HS students, keep in chat. The skills you acquire in AvChat are used more often in daily living as an adult than the shit you're fed PhyEd (if they even have that in Canada). Typing skills for when you're being flamed by xen0, vocabulary when you're listening to me, and sexual innuendo when you're talking with [insert any male AvChat regular here] are all very consistent demands in the real world. -Glass PS. | | | Dam those school firewalls. If it was a computer access thing (which i'm sure it's not) I used to get around that by accessing the stuff through Word Our access to stuff like flash drives was blocked but by typing the drive letter in Word's web toolbar you could get to it (hahaha) [last edit 4/9/2006 9:34 AM by M.
