How much of a risk is hanta virus?

There's a condemned attic around here and when I went there the first time, I could see rat poison and traps placed everywhere and saw about half a dozen small rats that were caught.

The area is dusty have a serious infestation. Am I at a serious risk of catching hanta virus from going to such locations?

Yes, you are. If not hantavirus, then something else that is equally bad. Wear the respy.

From the CDC:
" There are several other ways rodents may spread hantavirus to people:

* If a rodent with the virus bites someone, the virus may be spread to that person-but this type of transmission is rare.
* Researchers believe that people may be able to get the virus if they touch something that has been contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, and then touch their nose or mouth.
* Researchers also suspect people can become sick if they eat food contaminated by urine, droppings, or saliva from an infected rodent. "

Keep hands away from face, that mean don't be playing with the respirator when there. Wash hands before handling food afterward. Learn the carriers of the disease, and avoid the areas where they live. Known animal vectors for this disease:

The fleas and deer ticks may pose a greater danger of infection for other diseases. The fleas got to go somewhere when the rat dies. If lymes disease is prevalent in that area, BEWARE! Check for ticks thoroughly afterward. I've had lyme's ,and it's no walk in the park. It's mild compared to the others contagions that these rodents/fleas/ticks can harbor.

Personally I don't worry about these things, but I would avoid known heavily contaminated areas, or at least limit my exposure.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
