| | | Does anyone know if there are any sites in the northern and eastern West Virginia areas? All that I've heard of is the old race track in Charles Town, but I can't confirm if it's been abandoned or not. Anyone know?

| | | Northern/Eastern WV is a really big place, can you narrow it down? Are you in the Eastern Panhandle? or the northern Panhandle?

Martinsburg had a historic and quite large train roundhouse that had been abandoned for a good number of years, but I believe it has been renovated.

I have been to the roundhouse a couple times and it is a cool spot. Renovation is in full swing right now but nowhere near complete.

That's interesting, I read something about renovations, but the article is quite old. I need to make a trip to the Martinsburg area to take a backroads tour. I'm sure of anything specific east of the mountains, because the area is becoming an exurb of the metro area of Washington D.C. Things happen there, unlike the rest of the state.

| | | To be more specific I mean the areas around and between Morgantown and Martinsburg. And yes, the roundhouse is being renovated. And it's a good thing too, as they nearly tore it down.

| | | Well, it's a little NE of Martinsburg, but in the Mercersburg PA area there is really cool former Gov. site. It is a remote Presidential Emergency Facilities Microwave Radio Relay Station, Site 2 - "Cannonball" http://coldwar-c4i...nnonball/pef2.html Pretty easy to get to if you don't mind the 2-3 mile up hill hike (it is an abandoned paved road though. PM if you want specific directions, and sorry in advance I only know the way up from the PA side of the mountain, there is a MA way up too.
Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated. |

How many buildings/bunkers are still on the property. Or is it just that one tower?

| | | There is the tower, a couple of telecom/generator vaults and the basement of this place is usually flooded and has been rumored to be huge. I've heard people ice skated in it in the early days.

Is it worth it to go see? Does the water go down or is it always flooded?

| | | There used to be some good sites on this and "Site R" (see UE DB http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=21956) but post 9/11 about 85% or them oddly disappeared. I have some stuff but I'd have to scan it all for you. On a personal note, I found this site to be totally facinating and I can only liken it to a completely inverted Atlas Missile silo! Here is a short description of what was there about 3 years ago, when I was last there and some links: -Floor 1: Decontamination and security. Mostly vandalized but the bulk of the room is still covered in bathroom tile. Large blast door/main/only door has been removed. -Floor 2-7: Note the elevator is here but doesn't work, you have to use the access ladder which is about 75% still there. These all appear to be former equipment/radio rooms. All floors are mounted on springs as are all fixtures (much like a missile silo) -Floor 7-9/10: There is a bigger floor (7) that has access to the tower top via a large blast door. The top is divided into 2 level and blacked out plexiglass once kept all the antennas, and where they were pointing, secret. Most of it is broken out now offering a 2 level open air "balcony". -Basement: Flooded up to the top 3 feet. I am told the water level can go down a little and freeze in the winter. Since nobody knows for sure what is down there, (in the water and under it) I wouldn't recommend checking it out.
http://coldwar-c4i...nball/maxwell1.htm Presidential memo discussing the current status of the site. http://coldwar-c4i...el/tower-sect.html This is a cross section of a sister facility and it can only be imagined what is underground at Cross Mountain, I can vouch that the above ground diagram of the tower is accurate. However I've never seen, nor has anyone else ever seen any evidence of escape hatches or other belowground access. This site is also shorter than Cross Mountain.
