| | post office tunnel < on 2/13/2006 8:18 AM >
| | | " In 1954 the federal Minister of Public Works applied to the City for a ninety-nine (99) year lease of lands beneath City streets to construct and operate a mail transfer tunnel from the main CPR station to the newly to be constructed main Post Office. At that time the mail came to Vancouver on the CPR railway. As the Vancouver Charter then read, a lease in excess of thirty (30) years required the assent of the electors. Council approved a thirty (30) year lease and directed Corporation Counsel to seek a Charter amendment to grant leases in excess of thirty (30) years to the federal government without the assent of the electors. The thirty (30) year lease with the federal Minister of Public Works was entered into October 10, 1957. Shortly after completion of the tunnel, mail began to move by air and so the tunnel was never used. " Supposedly the only way into this tunnel is an entrance in the Main Post Office, in the "docks" area, where the big trucks carrying all the mail come. Is there another entrance at the CPR railway, or is that blocked off?

| | | I imagine that there is an entrance, I think I heard Mowgli speak of it once. I am also interested in that. You could probably find out by going there maybe. N.

| | | Its sealed up with concrete at the north end. you could access it from the post office, but the post office is heavily guarded. Perhaps a manhole, or vent?
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | With Google Earth, my own experience inside the tunnel, and a History of Vancouver book:
The map shows where the main branch of the tunnel is. Most of the offshoots are now blocked off by the SkyTrain, and sealed with cement (as mentioned above). However, I am sure that it came to a four way intersection at Dunsmiur and Richards. One section led to VMPP (The Post Office) via Dunsmuir, one tunnel led down to Waterfront. The other two tunnels are noe sealed. There was/is also an exit on Water street. but I'm not sure where it exited, so it is not labelled on the map.

| | | From what I know, there are no off shoots to this tunnel. It goes from the Post Office to Waterfront Station. I've heard the Post Office entrance is near the Customs area. The other end is in the basement of Waterfront Station. The Skytrain tunnel is a different tunnel all together. From John Atkins site, there is a photo of the end of the line at Waterfront Station here: http://www.flickr....908/in/set-266348/ Click on the link under the photo to see a picture of the hatch from the tunnel side. Hopefully John Atkins will do another tour in there some time in the future, I think that would be the only real way in.

| | | Well the entrance used to be in the customs area, but that's now a parking lot for Postal Vans (although you aren't supposed to know that). I'm not sure if there were offshoots, but from the way the cementing was done, it looks like a very clear possibility. I've heard a rumour that the tunnel connected all of the Postal stations (Stn. A is on the map), but I have no proof. I'm planning to write to the local Canada Post history guy and see if I can get some more info. I also heard that some of it is underwater, but I don't believe that. It used to be opened every year at Hallowe'en for Posties (luckily I know quite a few of them), but it's been closed for the past 3 years or so. I'll let you know if I learn anything.

Both my parents work at the Main Post Office, which the tunnel is situated in. I was just wondering if there is a entrance other than the post office one. cause they keep the post office entrance locked up as tight as a b*tch. padlock, key, gate, camera. also its not under water, cause then they would have sealed off the open entrance. i don't think its a parking lot, isn't it a place where the GIANT HUMONGOUS TRUCKS come in with there BAGS OF MAIL and dump them to be processed? Meh,i'll ask my parents [last edit 2/15/2006 3:54 PM by Zikan - edited 1 times]

| | | My parents both worked there as well. Yeah it's not really a parking lot, but there's always a bunch of Postal vans parked there. And yes the VMPP end of the tunnel is locked tighter than the door on Al Capone's cell. I keep forgetting little details while I post, but right where the tunnel turns from Richards to Cordova, there is an alcove with stairs leading upwards. I've never had the chance to get in the alcove (the Hallowe'en decorations got in the way), but near the end there's one or two branches which extend towards the water. I'll write to the history guy (Fred Danells) and see if he can get me some information. As it happens, my Social Studies teacher has an interest in the tunnel, so I can say I'm doing a school project. Canada Post also renewed their license to own the tunnel for another 50 years or something like that. I found it on Google.

He may indeed need someone to help "get information", if they don't co-operate! Parent's can be strong willed and resistive!

| | | An Alcove eh? I remember when I went to the Halloween thing (lol I got a pin that said "I survived the Tunnel") that there were a couple of "alcoves" The vampire person/thing that scared people was in an alcove. Lol, my parents didn't say anything, i guess they think i'm going to step on a rusty nail and die. Paradox22, what section/department your parents work in? Retail(lol highly unlikely, but thats the only one I can remember rite now)
note: my parents said that Customs was or is one floor above [last edit 2/16/2006 1:36 AM by Zikan - edited 1 times]

| | | Yeah, Customs was/is the floor above. Neither of my parents work at VMPP right now, but both of them did in the past. This wasn't just one of the small alcoves, this was an actual staircase leading upwards behind an arch. It was in the graveyard section.

| Unfortunately the tunnel's been closed for the past three years. Apparently not very many people wanted to volunteer at the event and so it was cancelled. Sad, but unfortunately true.

| | | I realize this is totally useless information for people who want to go in there, but an academic group I was with last year got a tour of the entire postal plant, including the tunnel up until it reached the large locked doors at the end. I'm pretty sure they still do tours, and it's actually not a bad place to get all touristy. Unfortunately, I did not bring my camera since I didn't know about the tunnel at the time. If I worked near the entrance (if I remember, beside the relatively gloomy vehicle loading area), I'd be wary of hearing/seeing things move in the shadows. The whole postal plant already has a moody feeling to it even without the tunnel. Anyway, call them up and see if you can arrange for a tour if you're keen.
