| | | Just a curiosity here. Out of all of you here who regularly post photos here, I have a few questions: Are you using digital or film? If using film, what scanning software do you use? For either digital or film, what software are you using for photo editing/manipulation and processing your photos before posting them here? What kind of editing do you usually do to your photos before posting them? I'm just curious about this as I'm thinking about upgrading or changing the software that I'm using. I'm currently using Paint Shop Pro 8 and I'm wondering if changing to Photoshop CS2 would be worth it.

| | | You should post this in the photography forum. That way you have access to people who don't normally read the SOUTH forum and there are lots more photo enthusiasts there who can condescend to you and make you feel like a total idiot while they dance around the original question and expound on the virtues of whichever hot trend they're currently enamoured by. As mor me personally,I'm an idiot and use a digital camera and Photoshop.
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

Actually, the reason I posted my question here is for the very same reason you just gave. I wanted real answers from my contemporaries who are photographing the same thing I'm photographing. I'm not sure why you'd be an idiot for shooting digital as most digital cameras are quite capable of producing more than acceptable results for posting to these forums. BTW, thanks for dancing around my original question but finally giving me a straight up answer. ;)

| | | Yeah, I use a digital camera and Photoshop CS. The only processing I really do is just a little adjusting of the "levels". I am, however planning on doing more serious adjustments in the future.

| | | Yeah it just depends on how much you want to be able to do. Last time I checked (like 5 years ago) Paint Shop Pro wasn't really much for editing photos but rather used more for adding artistic content. It might be worth it for you to switch to Photoshop since it was made specifically to alter and enhance photos. I would do that first before taking it to the next level as Sam has. Also, if you are using a digital camera, it only helps so much to have good editing software - you have to first have pictures taken with a camera with a decent lens and ccd to see the big differences.

| | | For film scanning, I use a PlusTek film scanner and VueScan software, the latter which is free and far better than what came with it. For digital RAW files, I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 for editing, then have some actions saved so I can add on-the-spot borders and name tags, the latter which I have recently started doing. To create 90px thumbnails, I use Macromedia Fireworks 8.

I have a related question. I've heard that it's better to save in RAW and I've always used JPEG. Is that a camera one of the camera option I just have to pick? (Fuji Finepix 3000)

RAW is something that is camera specific. For example, RAW files from a Nikon D70 is not the same from a comparable Canon product. RAW files allow you more ability to control the image, such as adjusting the temperature, tint, shadow, etc. with no loss of quality. Your camera can save as RAW and JPEG. RAW files are much larger than JPEG's. For example, on my 1 GB CF card, I can hold 82 "RAW+JPEG Basic" files, or 87 "RAW" files, or ~290ish "JPEG High" files. JPEG's are easy to crop, adjust a few things, and then upload or make small prints, but the more you open them, edit, and resave them, the lower the quality the image will be. Check this site out on RAW versus JPEG. Excellent read. http://graphicssof...hy/a/raworjpeg.htm Edit: I don't think that article is very good after rereading it. Very uninformed and contridcts much of what I have confirmed in other materials. I find it hard to believe she shoots wedding photographs, for example, in medium JPEG resolution format. All the pro photographers that shoot weddings (many are my close friends) shoot in RAW format. [last edit 1/2/2006 7:32 PM by seicer - edited 1 times]

| | | Your answer confirms what I've been told before that opening and closing JPG's deteriorates the quality. So, for the "tourist snapshots" jpeg's are convenient but , in the long run for the important stuff I should use RAW format?

| | | I shoot RAW, the way to go imo. you have allot more control of the image without the loss of quality. I convert to .JPG after I am done in Nikon Capture. then I do the final touch ups in Photoshop on the .JPG file
