| | my day draining in vienna, Va < on 11/11/2005 11:53 PM >
| | | today i did my first "real" draining, where i actually planned it, and went out, and got in the drains. i started out this morning, trying drains near the house. i popped a manhole, where i thought i would find the biggest drains, and it ended up being a tiny room, w/ 2 tiny tunnels. so i moved up the hill a little bit, and the cover was too heavy for me to lift off, so i moved up to the one where i thought i would have had the least luck, and finally found something i could at least get into. it was a small room that a very small drain passed through, the room was about 6x6x8. but it was interesting.lots of little cave or camel crickets. i found some writing on the wall, that my grandfather thinks was written by a boy my mom had a crush on when she was little. After that, we followed the manholes some more, and came to the nearby school. Today being veterans day, we thought school wasnt in session, so we thought nothing of walking through the ground with a machete(for cutting through brush in the woods), a steel bar, flashlight, and gloves. school was in session... the lady who spotted us stopped us, and called the police. she then called on her radio, and put the school on lockdown. my grandfather and i had to talk ourselves out of getting arrested! it was an experience ill never forget. after we got out of that whole mess, we decided to go to another drain i had spotted at one point. it was pretty small, but i brought my skateboard, laid on it, and pushed through the tunnel. it was pretty awkward, but it worked, i could tell it wasnt going anywhere interesting, so i went to the largest drain opening i knew of in that area, and went in that way. i kneeled down on my skateboard and pushed through the first section.
Then, it shrank a bit, and i left the skateboard, and just shuffled through it for a short bit. afterward, it opened up, and i could run crouched. it was an overall great experience. i even had fun with passing cars, as they would approach, i would shoot my hand out and grab a stick out from in front of them. then for the next car, i would just reach out and set the stick down. next i went to a place where i thought a drain should be, and it was indeed there. so i climbed in and ran back! There were two openings, the first, on the left went back maybe 200-300 feet, and split into two smaller ones that i saw no end to, so i turned back. the second, went about 600-700 feet back and crossed under a road, and popped out near whole foods store.
lastly we visited an area that was once a slave plantation, that eventually became a black neighborhood, that is now all abandoned. it was very interesting, seeing the yard now, and looking at how nice and pretty it was in old pictures and slides in the house. this is a fallen in storage area possibly. it had a flat roof that sat about 2 feet above the ground, then it had a walk out door, big enough to back a pick-up truck into.
so that was my day, thanks for reading! peace, ~Bry~

| | | I actually see 'coon tracks all the time (even in rather deep or long drains). Thankfully I've never run into one (another reason not to go draining at night). Oh yeah, and as for the crickets, I see those all the time too, but only in smaller drains for some reason. At one part of my first drain, which we call "Cricket Run", there are crickets all over the ceiling that jump onto your head as you pass. Yuck!

| | | Its not dropping feces in the water because its marking the area with its scent. To do so in the water would be pointless. If there is a creek nearby or something its probably got a bunch of food there. [/nerdymoment] [last edit 11/12/2005 6:44 PM by res_novae - edited 1 times]
