| | | Posted by Servo Jeez, we've been over this 100 times... you guys do know there are reasons other than asbestos to use a respirator?
|
Indeed, in an old coal-based power plant we took off the respirators for about five minutes to catch our breath. The next morning I blew nose, and sure enough it came out black. Just that five minutes unprotected made a difference.

| | | Like a lot of people I suspect, what I take varies with the location. I usually keep a few extra items in my car anyways in case an opportunity arises. Here's what I always carry: Leatherman Mini-Mag Zippo Pocketknife band-aid kit (fits in pocket) Gloves Drinking water Cheap digital camera extra AA batteries Cell phone notepad and pen/pencil I hold most of that stuff either in pockets or a fanny pack (it has a nice spot for a water bottle on it). I really dislike taking a backpack if I can help it, unless I need more gear ie: boots, respirator, more clothes, rope etc.

| | | i'd forego the camera for a first aid kit anyday. leatherman's always handy. other tools are site-specific. i don't bring a mask on most of my explorations, but that's just me.

| | | In addition to all the fine things suggested by previous posters, might I recommend an AAA card? At the risk of sounding an awful lot like my mom, I'd like to point out: not only can AAA save your ass if/when your car breaks down in a remote spot (which is where most of my local UE is happening), but they'll post bail for you up to $5000, should you happen to get that bad cop that brings you in on B & E charges. Plus maps, discounts on motels for your long-distance UE expeditions... etc etc etc. Just a thought. (And no, I don't work for AAA; I just re-upped my membership after a 3 year lapse, so the benefits are fresh in my mind.) Keeping on topic, I bring: ~Leatherman-esque multi tool ~2 or 3 cheapo pocket flashlights (I'm not doing draining or the like, so I only need them for dim spots) ~ziploc bag w/ 1st aid stuff (gauze, tape, antihistamines, Tylenol, steri-wipes) ~travel size insect repellant (I do lots of outside UE in Virginia, ie. Bug Central this time of year) ~camera ~ID & "If you find me unconscious: these are my allergies, and call this person" card (I'm allergic to latex, so this an issue if I should end up in a hospital) ~cell phone ~any pertinent maps ~a few extra ziploc bags for keeping valuables dry in case of wet conditions ~bottled water for keeping me hydrated in case of dry conditions I wear BDU's on most trips, and so can stuff all that into pockets. The less encumbered, the better, IMO.

| | | "It's all about the camera" again! Canon 300D D-SLR 18-45mm Sigma 50mm Sigma DG EX Macro 50-200mm Sigma Cheapo Tripod & Camera bag (Lowepro Dryzone 200 camera backpack on the way) Then the essentials: A lot of poweraid and some kinda snack bars that won't melt in my camera bag. If I'm not solo we use one of the people as a sherpa to haul our water and food. Picnics in abandoned buildings are just fucking cool. A mini-mag 2AA in my pocket, a rayovac 2D in my camera bag, and for tunnels and drains I bring a 5D bigmag. Not to mention every so often a 34DD to help haul my camera equipment around. Only the essentials. -Dan

| | | The best thing to do is ask yourself a few questions first... 1. have i been there before? if so you already know what kinda stuff to expect so pack for it. if you havent... pack for what you think it might be like...caves=flashlights, water, boots etc. drains= more flashlights, backpack, lightstick(s), alot of batteries...etc. basically sit down and plan.... what if you get lost? what if you get caught? where are you going to do your ue? just simple things like that can prepare you mentally and also help you decide what to bring with you, also think about security. if you were the owner of this place if its a building where would you put security to make sure no one got in? simple questions are often the most helpful

| | | I just realized I've never posted in this thread, also, I've just changed allot of my gear. I carry a Camelback Cloud Walker containing: 4D Maglite, 2AA maglite, 3-mode Rayovac headlamp, 2 LED single-mode Rayovac, Lineman's tool, Manhole key (palm-sized, homemade), respirator, knit hat, bandana (I sweat allot), watch, ziploc bags, and I'm currently trying to convince myself to stop carrying my camera. I always carry my cell phone, wallet and keys, thought they get bagged up and put away when exploring. I normally wear black jeans, black combat-style boots and a light blue workshirt. Very unsuspiscious but still sturdy. In my truck I've got allot of crap used for offroad driving that is also useful for UE. Things like a four ton comealong, hi-lift jack, chains, etc... I almost always stick with drains, so most of my stuff is related to that. [last edit 8/4/2005 12:29 AM by Random - edited 1 times]

| | | Here's normally what I bring on a daily basis. Even to work (call center, yay): - 3/D Maglite - AA MiniMag - Brinkmann Rebel LED (AA) - Nexxtech Perpetual Flashlight (only for if all other lights fail, nice for backup) - Glow Sticks (for when the perpetual light breaks somehow) - Swisstool Multi-tool - Mechanix Gloves - Samsung E316 cell phone - 3.2 MP Canon Digi-Cam - Extra batteries - Basic first aid kit - Urban Camo - Wallet, ID, etc - Respirator - Beverages of some sort as well as some type of snacks All of the below listed gear is optional depending on the situation. - Gerber BackPaxe Hatchet - Medium length prybar - Small Grappling hook (waiting on delivery) - Other misc. things All this is packed into a medium size US ALICE pack (OD colour). The pack is still comfortable w/ all that gear in it surprisingly.

I took a picture of my gear layed out for a friend and figured I'd post it up here as well. If I put up the right shot, you can see my cat Sally's head in the lower right. Who would have thought a backpack could smell so bad!?!

I carry a spare canteen, a great deal of powerbars, of course, my gun and my knife, and my survival kit. It has everything I need to make fire, signal, first aid, ect.

It depends on where you are going as to what you should take. I took gloves, a respirator, or dust mask, hat, goggles, a good flashlight, and a cell phone as standard equipment everywhere i went.I kept various other items ready, because i never knew where i would wind up next. I had a miner's lamp, and battery ready to go, along with an extra battery, [last edit 8/31/2005 5:59 AM by greywolf45 - edited 1 times]

When The Detail Lost Its Freedom
| | Re: Equipment: What to bring <Reply # 378 on 9/19/2005 9:47 PM >
| | | I believe I have posted in this specific thread before, but if not, here is a 'recap'. I pack light. No tactical gear. No camo. No big 2 foot long flash lights. All of what I carry fits in my pocket and if I get caught by the fuzz, I have nothing on me relating to burgalizing. I just have to bust out my 'I'm a photographer' line. Hat - For those cold nights and great for snotsicles. Gloves - When it gets cold out in Canada, it gets cold. MiniMag - Simple and does the job (belt carrying case beside it). Extra Batteries - I carry more then seen in that photo. At least 10, fully recharged. 2 in the light, 2 in the camera, leaving the rest as backup. Small Knife - Small, cheap kitchen knife. Easy to conceal, sharp, and is small though to be legally carried. Water - Occasionally I will bring a waterbottle. Calling Card - When I drain or go in tunnels I'll leave a simple card behind somewhere dry. The one in that photo says 'aplz infiltrated this beeeotch!' with a nice smiley face. (I actually don't use the name aplz on it, though.) Camera - Because you can't explore without a camera! (I don't use that one - I put it there for the hell of it.)
Health wise...Sometimes if I can find any stashed away in my cupboards I'll bring some bandages and rubbing alcohol. If I'm going somewhere that toxins are a problem, I'll bring a simple paper mask you see your dentist wearing. When I'm with somebody and they have a FRS radio, I'll bring mine. If it can fit in my pocket, I'll bring it! [last edit 9/20/2005 5:17 PM by aplz - edited 3 times]
