| | | Abandoned School. This is a couple of shots of an old school I came across probabaly 15 years ago, I think it was in jacksonville or St. Augustine. Thought I would upload a small post of it here. When I get some time I'll dig out my prints, scan and try do a location upload of these. meanwhile if someone recognizes it, I;d appreciate letting me know which town it was in!

| | | That is the infamous Public School #4, also known as Annie Lyttle Public School. It was opened in 1917 to serve the Riverside district of Jacksonville. However, after the construction for the Roosevelt Interstate system began in the '50s, student numbers began to decline. It finally closed around '75 due to the interstate practically being within arms reach of the place. It served as district office for the Duval county school until the 80s. After that, the place has become a haven for squaters, miscreants, crack heads, and Satan worshippers. I've been wanting to hit that place bad. But the city has it pretty well barricaded with a nice fence around it. Not to mention the front is well lit with flood lights. I've done a lot of research of the place - I think I might know of a way in from a recent source. Also have some historic photos of the place. Word to warning - the place carries nickname of, "Great place to be arrested."

| | | I used to live in Jax a few years ago and remember seeing this building all the time from the highway. It intrigued me immensely then. Just want to say that it's great to finally have some history on the place - I love the architecture... Cheers

The Best Explorers You'll Never Meet

| | | Oddly enough School Four is the first place I ever explored. I've been there so many times I am almost as comfortable there as I am in my own home. It used to be a great site for the beginner: plenty of entrances, no bright lights, decent material condition. My friends and I used it as a testing ground for new equipment (night vision, boots, rope, cameras) back in the day because we knew it so well. Getting into it now is a completely different matter. The stories you've heard are true. There are bright halogen lamps surrounding it now as well as a nice privacy fence. They also boarded up every entrance, I'm talking thick plywood covering reinforced cinder blocks cemented into every opening. The place shows the marks of people trying to get in (and failing) all over, and I haven't heard of anyone gaining access for a while now. When you do get inside it really isn't that interesting. Most of the good artifacts have been removed by the city/developers now, though there is some choice graffiti adorning the walls. There are two floors and a basement to explore, though with it's current state the only way to get into the basement is through a hole in the floor in the library/principal's office which may take some climbing skill to get out of. The cafeteria/auditorium is in bad shape, and is why the place get's the reputation for being unstable. It's roof had been deteriorating for years, and finally it collapsed one night during a storm. The room is a mess now but the rest of the school is stable, other then places where people a busted it up. Other then the cops, there is no need to worry about other people if you do make it inside. It's too hard for the drunk high school crowd to get into now, and there are easier places for the homeless to sleep. I'm thinking about adding it to the database since no one else has. It's a shame I don't have that many digital pictures of the place. I have a bunch of prints laying around somewhere, and maybe I'll post them some day when I gain access to a scanner. If you have any more questions about it feel free to ask, I know the place like the back of my hand.

| | | cool, it's interesting to hear your stories about this old place. I to have a handful of shots I will get scanned and if someone sets up a lDB for it, I'll gladly contribute. I actually have a shot of this building hanging in my living room!

| | | Join the club. My old apartment was decorated with pictures of the interior, and my favorite picture of my exploration group and I was taken there too. For some reason it's very photogenic for a decrepit old building.

| | | I have a several photos of the school that I pulled off the web. I would create a database entry for them, though there is the concern of ethics. They're not my photos. If it is ok with the mods, I'll gladly create a DB location for them. BTW, here are some historical photos of the place, borrowed from the Jacksonville Historical Society. As you can see from the botton picture, this was definitely a beautiful building in it's day. It still is a beautiful building despite what vandals have done with the place. The last job I worked at, one of the techs told me that his mom used to work there when it was still being used as the school district office.

| | | I'd say just give the historical pics their own gallery. I think everyone knows and understands that the historical pics are very rarely the poster's.

| | | I actually found them from a webshots site that appears to not be there anymore. Ironically, I dl'd all of the photos for use with a different, non-UE project. But if I am gathering that it is ok ethically, to post them, I will and note that I did not take them.

| | | I seriously doubt anyone's going to freak out if you post some pics that aren't yours for history's sake.
