| | Locust Point? < on 5/31/2005 12:48 PM >
| | | Having just watched Ladder 49, most of which was filed in Baltimore...the large grain silo warehouse was actually filmed in a real life abandoned grain silo in Locust Point. It looks to be quite huge, at 20 stories. I'm wondering if anyone has ever gone inside and checked it out. I can't seem to find anything online about it. -Ex

| | | the spot is kind of shady.surrounded by neighborhoods, theres a large freight yard in the front of it, there taking the parking lot of the old silos and converting them into a place for fuckin yuppies that want to move into the city and have a slight view,so it now has security, its actually about a block from fort mchenry (were the star spangled banner was written) it hasnt been closed down that long now, only a few years, i actually have never been inside but have been all around the outside.

People always look at me funny when I say I was raised in the murder capitol of the US. Then they walk away slowly with out turning there back to me.
I want to see this movie just to see some of the other MD locations I can pick out...

You should. It's pretty good. The old hospital in Annapolis is used in it, as is an old power plant. You'll cry at the end. At least, we did.

| | | I can't find locust point actually on a map. So maybe what Louie saw is just a very simular silo. I am sure there are many with this being an old port city and all. EDIT: You know it is almost impossible to tell the location that picture was taken. So I don't know Louie will have to tell us exactly where. I wish I had time today to ride down there, cause now I am curious.... [last edit 6/1/2005 4:17 PM by andrea - edited 1 times]

| | | if your going north on 95 right after the tunnel on your right hand side its right behind the penn mary coal peirs. right next to the dundalk marine terminals. you can either take keith ave. or you can take eastern ave exit come around go past night shift go over the railroad tracks you hit and old firestation(under 95) at the "T" intersection you make a left there go by the old penn mary freight yard, now owned by canton railroad...follow all the way down through some factories and at the next "T" intersection look to your right and you'll see the building. my good freind live in O'donnell hgts which is about a 3 minute car ride from there. locust point is if your driving south bound on 95 after you come out of the tunnel the rail yard there, to your right, is locust point...the old silo there is not the one pictured by louie...that one is off of fort ave. right next to fort mchenry. Im not saying it's the worst, I just meant to say its not an old hospital in the middle of the woods.
Edit: I took the photo southbound on the harbor tunnel highway, 895? or 395? not sure. It's on the north end out town. [last edit 6/1/2005 5:17 PM by Louie - edited 1 times]

I grew up in the area and I remember a brewery with colt 45 on the side of it. Was that the American Brewery?

I saw it from a distance and it looked so much smaller (somewher on the beltway, I was on a bus coming coming from the city fireacademy going back downtown), but I guess it really is as big as they showed on the movie. [last edit 10/1/2005 9:32 PM by obxprnstar - edited 1 times]

No, that is to the west out side of the belt way. They are currently tearing that builing down sadly. The American is downtown.

| | | The silo that was used in Ladder 49 is the Van Brothers Grain Elevator located in Dundalk (pictures: http://www.lauraca...ming_news_Pg2.html) The silo in Locust Point is a part of a development and is being converted into condos. As the fires in the movie were real, Mark Sapperstein and Pat Turner, the developers who own the building would have never allowed a real fire to be started in their silo in Locust Point. Additionally, the silo was designated as a local historic landmark and the Maryland Historical Trust would not have allowed the building to be burned. The grain elevator in Locust Point is much smaller as well and has a destinctive "shoot" coming from it to the water that is not seen in the movie yet, as of yesterday, is still there.
