| | | Thanks, I found the pics Freaking cool, I'm jealous! I don't dare risk an illegal crane climb right now, since I'm waiting for a shot at an operator's apprenticeship. What company is going to want somebody who got busted for messing with their cranes? So I have to wait, but it will be worth it As for the crane in your pic, I think I might be able to ID it..by the looks of the Apex (that part right over the top of the tower), I think that was a Pecco or Peiner crane you climbed..those cranes are known for the graceful backwards angling of that bit of their "anatomy". And I love that pretty red and white paintjob..Nice looking crane.

| | | I looked at it again today, it says "Potain" on the back, what ever that may mean... You can see the bottom of at this site, http://www.ohiou.e...ldgs/newbaker.html which is the university's site for the new building. I know that there was a big hooplah about the boom of the crane and that it required an special operator that cost a lot more money per hour, I am sure you know more about that than I do...

| | | Potain is the name of a particular crane manufacturer- we've got four of their older cranes operating here in town now. As for the specialness of this crane, if you take any pics of the upper part of it, I would love to see them. I can't tell much about it by its tower alone There are two types of Tower crane- "Hammerhead" cranes, where the boom aka the jib is fixed in a horizontal position, and Luffing cranes, where the jib can be raised or lowered.

| | | http://www.cnn.com...rane.ap/index.html Suspect in Florida death climbs crane in Atlanta Thursday, May 26, 2005 Posted: 9:25 AM EDT (1325 GMT) Florida officials identified the man on the crane as Carl Edward Roland. ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A man wanted in Florida in the death of his girlfriend climbed an 18-story crane at a construction site and remained there Thursday morning as authorities tried to talk him down. The man got onto the crane around 5 p.m. Wednesday and stayed there, indicating he was contemplating suicide, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley said Thursday. Florida officials identified the man as Carl Edward Roland, 41, who was wanted by the Pinellas County, Florida, sheriff's department in the slaying of his former girlfriend. The badly beaten body of Jennifer L. Gonzalez, 36, was found in a pond Tuesday. However, Atlanta police were not releasing the man's identity -- or any other information about him -- Thursday morning. "I don't want to give this guy any notoriety. I don't want any copycats," Quigley said. "I just hope he comes down safely." The intersection where the construction site was located was closed, snarling traffic in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood. Police negotiators tried to talk to the man throughout the night. Quigley wasn't sure how the man got onto the crane, saying it was possible the construction crew had left for the day. | | | It's a little hard to tell, but that crane may be one of the newer model Potains out there..Or possibly a Liebherr. Either way, it's quite a nice looking crane. And who's Goliath? The link for the pic's not working Unbelievable what happened in Atlanta..makes things sucky for all us crane lovers, that's for sure.

| | | Operators get down without dying all the time. It's just a matter of climbing the crane how it was meant to be climbed (not on the outside of the tower, use the ladders), and generally keeping a clear, safe head on your shoulders. No booze or drugs, please. If you use your head and don't do anything stupid up there, it's usually quite safe. And yes, that IS a nice Potain Saddle jib configuration, also known as hammerhead.

Crane climbing within blocks of the Capital building?? Are you nuts? You'd be in violation of D.C. airspace and get shot down by fighter planes!

Note Capitol Building to extreme left. It is not nearly as far as it looks in the picture.

| | | blinkenleichts project? What's that? My german is non-existant. Love that cluster of cranes, wish we would get that happening here. Maybe I could finally quit this security gig and get operating. Also, anyone remember seeing this on TV years ago? Somewhere in Berlin, they had a cluster of cranes like this, and they got all the operators together and staged a Tower Crane ballet of sorts, syncronizing the darn things! It was freaking cool to watch.

blinkenliechts loosely translates to 'blinky lights', but I do not know what Servo means. I can only imagine it is some kind of MIT hack-ish project.

| | | That Atlanta story was the first of 2 crane climbers THAT WEEK. The second guy just got drunk and climbed the same crane as the FL Murder Suspect. He stayed up there until he ran out of cigarettes and then came down to get arrested.
