| | | Just bought an Oxygen monitor. < on 5/8/2005 3:23 AM >
| | | I just bought a Scott Mini-SA with oxygen sensor (similar to this: http://www.omnicon.../scott-mini-sa.jpg). Supposedly the sensor is new and should last 3-5 years before needing replacement. It seems to work pretty well and it's very sensitive, just breathing on the sensor can drop it down below the warning level and set off the alarm. The loud beeping can be annoying, but I can't think of a situation where I'd need stealth in a potentially low-oxygen environment. One thing that's odd is that it reads slightly higher than the "standard" 20.9% atmospheric oxygen concentration. Yesterday it was 21.1, and today it was all the way up to 22% in the house. I'm not sure if being right at sea level, in a rain forest, with house plants can raise the oxygen concentration in a house, or if my sensor needs calibration. On a related note, the guy who owns the local gold mine finally told me to stay out due to bad air, so this thing might change his mind about letting me poke around

| | | Not so fast in the mine yet. It may read O2, but the poison gas will still kill you no matter what O2 levels are. People have walked 30 feet in and dropped dead, not often, but it only takes once.

Thats right, I don't walk 30 feet in and drop dead often. I think the once would do it.

I use a multigas monitor at work (forgot the make/model), and the oxygen reading does the exact same thing. It's very annoying. Do you have the gas tank to re-calibrate it? We have to check the calibration of ours daily, and re-calibrate it once a week or so.

| | | No, You need the special calibrating gas from the equipment manufacturer. As far as in tunnels, a low O2 aint my biggest worry....I am worried about other gasses that can actually kill you pretty fast. The one we use at work also seems to like to display around 20-22% so, I guess this is normal.

| | | Well, I'm mainly hoping to use this in local mines, where the main danger is just a lack of oxygen (not sure what's taking it's place, probably CO). In one of them you can take a candle with you, and when the candle goes out then you know there's not enough air to stick around (terrible method I know). I thought about using a mouse or getting an antique safety lamp, but I figured the digital sensor would be more accurate

| | | Isnt there a danger of methane in old mines? I think thats why they brought the little canary in a cage with them.... Canary dies, time to get the hell out.. I dunno, but are canaries cheaper than your O2 monitor?

| | | I paid about $70 for the monitor, with shipping. That's pretty normal for a mini-SA on ebay. I could catch field mice and bring them along, but I don't know how sensitive they are to low oxygen levels. The big mine that I hope to explore this summer actually has a pretty good air flow through it, but some of the smaller mines that dead-end with only one entrance are the ones with bad air.

| | | Canaries are old school man, but they still work. Something about their heart rate being faster the gas gets them first I think. Either way, they're not fool proof, but cheap and better than nothing.
