| | | Parkour! < on 4/28/2005 8:43 PM >
| | | Sorry if this has been discussed endlessly already, but are there many Traceurs here? The fitness thread got me wondering, is Parkour (Or it's techniques) considered to be one of the standard infiltration methods at our disposal? Has anyone here got to see sites only accessable through feats of impromptu gymnastics? My Parkour's rubbish, but there's lots of great roofscapes I'd never have got to see if I couldn't manage a basic wall run. And just learning I'm capable of carrying myself in restricted space has really increased my confidence to explore alone.

| | | I couldnt say Parkour has made a real improvement to any of my exploring, but skills have transferred over from one to another.I'm sure we've all just climbed things for fun before, and that experience has made it easier to get into some places. And then all that transferred to Parkour. The same goes for rolls, and balance and more stuff. PK is just another fun thing to do in my opinion.

| | | Parkour is a bit showy and unnecessary for exploring IMO, TRUE UEers would bodge together a ladder or walkway from a few old broomsticks, some binder twine and some old tin cans. On the other hand, I learned the jump-and-roll from parkour and it does come in handy occasionally.

In context, that was pretty hilarious. Out of context, it's a fair point. So, why isn't looking around a public library UE? Seriously, why? So, what's the exact opposite of looking around a place that; A ) Everybody knows exists B ) Everybody has access to c ) Is designed around a non-specialist, non-restricted purpose The answer? "True UE". Definitions can be broad as hell, but they're still handy to have.

| | | I use Parkour moves to infiltrate my local public library, to tie to this all together. I owe them $193 and climbing from a History Channel documentary that I rented last year for a research paper and then lost. I have to be sneaky around there, nowadays! You should see me in the place. I climb along the tops of shelves using the Parkour balance techniques and them do those sweet jumps from one shelve to another, right over the librarian's head, landing completely silently in the FIC VON section to get some sweet, wacky sci-fi books.

| | | What I just posted never happened, encase your sarcasm meter is malfunctioning. I meant to post something relative to the topic too, I swear! I was doing Parkour before I even knew that's what it was called. I mean, the walls running and the rolls and all that? I had always used those techniques, not really knowing that it had a name. Clever gymnastics are useful in UE, and confidence in balance and one's own physical abilities and limitations is key, but is it necessary to "learn Parkour"? Probably not, in my opinion.

| | | So, you don't like wacky Sci-Fi? Clearly Parkour (Or just gymnastic ability if you have a dislike of the P word) is both useful and inessential to exploring. I was just interested in hearing about some occasions where one was of use to the other.

| | | I don't know why people would NEED to learn parkour to be able to justify it : P The kinda stuff you do in parkour, no matter how basic is really good exercise, especially if you train with plyometrics. Plus being able to land/fall properly, roll, stuff like that really does become instinct (I still break-fall from taking Karate years ago) And can save you from some really painful landings. And doing a backflip across a road and dropping down two stories just looks cool...and isn't really a required skill in parkour anyway : D

I sure hope you were being sarcastic. Please explain to me what's unshowy and entirely necessary about doing all that to scale a fence when physical fitness can get you over it in seconds? We can't ALL be MacGyver. I think Million Candlepower lights are showy and TOTALLY unneccesary. A real urban explorer uses a Bic lighter

...and a REAL lumberjack uses a double-edged axe, ties his horses to pull the logs to the river, and then rides the logs through the rapids to get to the mill. I agree. To hell with chainsaws and trucks.
Why not use every tool in the toolbox to accomplish what you set out to do? If you need to run along a rooftop and dive over a satellite dish and onto the next rooftop 20 feet away, why not, if you can? Plus, it would make for a pretty natty photo. Parkourban exploration is hence born. (All royalties to myself.)

I was making a joke. Parkour is great for fun and fitness, But UEing is generally about observing, discovering and recording sites, not bouncing around them at mach 9 like a possessed jack-in-the-box. I just don't think the bulk of it goes with exploring, part of which (for me) is the McGyvering together of things to get to new places. Pretty much everyone's fetched an old crate or pallet or assembled some ladder-like thing to do something otherwise physically impossible (i.e. climb a very high wall or cross an otherwise unjumpable gap). Of course, there is no such thing really as a 'REAL UEer' like I said before because everybody approaches things a different way. Million candlepower lights are horribly unnecessary unless you're trying to signal ships from the rooftops, although now you mention it, I do actually have a lighter modified for exploring so it throws more light. It's not a bic, though.

| | | Would be good to be able to do that nice Parkour stuff, especially jumping and climbing stuff, although I'm more of an explorer that goes slowly and looks places and so on. But would be a nice hobby, although it could be a bit too painful for me if fall down some wall or break neck or something.. As well, I'm not very athletic.

Actually, they are great for bouncing light for photos. I'm not familiar with the term "parkour." Can someone explain it?

| | | I think being able to think properly and land from a fall is a skill that all UEers should have. I know it's come in handy for me several times when I've had to jump off a roof or slipped while climbing part of a building, although I learned breaking a fall from years of polevaulting, but parkour is probably a better way to learn it.

I've been PKing since I didn't even know what it was called. Azrael from UrbanFreeflow and I used to call it "Extreme Freestyle Street Walking" until we discovered that other people were into it, and that David Belle had already been doing it for years and years. I find it helps at times, but usually exploring is a floor-movement-only type activity. (although entry through windows can be fun)

I dont see how this has very much to do with UE. When I am exploring I don't find my self trying to clear obstacles in a fluid manner. Infact I rather like taking my time, or even finding routs around the obstacles. Rushing through a site in a "fluid manner" just isn't UE. Sure some of the "moves" like the roll, and the wall run are useful, but thay are not PK exclusive. I learned to roll as part of my Kung-fu training and im sure kung-fu has been around much longer then PK. as for the majority of the moves thay are useless for UE, and more for just show. aside from all that i think its important to take things slow at a UE site, you dont want to vault or climb off of anything you arent sure of, it could collapse on you.
