| | | | | Mystery Night Vision Scope < on 4/23/2005 4:33 AM >
| | | My grandfather recently gave me a night vision scope he picked up at a flea market back in the late 1990s. It is made by Varo, which apparently is now owned by Northrop-Grummam. Says on the label its a Model 55000 Detect-IR-Scope. The battery in it is very weird, and it says its a "Power Supply 3146 Varo Ser. No. 238" My grandfather apparently has determined the battery just needs to replaced on it and it will work fine. Any Ideas about this scope as well as where I can get a battery for it?

| | | No clue, I'm afraid. Does the battery mention what type it is, chemically? Maybe it could be recharged?

| | | Nope, it does not identify what type of battery it is.

| | | Being retarded, I'd probably try to charge it and see what happened. Maybe someone here with a modicum of electrical sense could tell you if this is a good idea or not.

| | | Why not send an E-mail to the company who made it. At least they should know and maybe they have still parts lying around.

| | | Well, attempting to charge a battery that is not rechargeable may yield a fairly predictable result (ie explosion, death, carpet fire) Especially when no such charger for the particular form factor of battery may exist. Google is about all I can recommend if you can't get a hold of the manufacturer. Of course you could always try and wire up the IR tube yourself if you're MacGyver : P

| | | Yeah, why don't you try and hook it up to some sort of AC adaptor if you know what voltage and all it is supposed to take, and see if it works or not, so you can save yourself the trouble of getting a battery for it if it is shot. If it does work, you might have better luck making a battery pack for it then finding a replacement battery, especially if it used a mercury battery which may now be illegal to buy, at least in the U.S.

| | | What I would try if you cant get any info on the battery: Take out the battery and hook up the scope to a low DC voltage, and keep on increasing the voltage till the scope appears to work. A variable DC supply would be perfect for this, however not many people have one of these. Simplest and cheapest way will be to hook up just one battery to it, and check to see if the scope works. If not, throw in another battery to increase the voltage, and check again -keep on doing this until you find the required voltage to operate this device.

| | | Oh...its a power transformer for the unit!. I googled the name in there (AN/PAS-6) and thats the device I have. I found a list of battery types from Fort Momonuth, NJ that said what battery it uses (BA1312) which oddly is at Radio Shack...
