About four years ago I made a thread for Santa's Workshop, a maintenance/work therapy building for the local psych hospital, so named for its handful of remaining Christmas decorations.



For the past 5 years, I've been shooting on a Nikon D3300, eventually upgrading to a Sigma 17-50. Back in March, wanting more features and to move to full-frame since I usually end up shooting handheld, I picked up a Nikon D610 on ebay. It came with what was described as a "junk lens in unknown condition", which turned out to be a Nikkor 35-80 that looks pretty nice. Covid then promptly killed any plans I had for the year, but last month I had a chance to take it for a spin at this old place.

At first I was a little bit disappointed in the results, but then I realized that for how dark it was, the D610 performed way better than I probably could have expected from the D3300. These were shot from ISO 2500-4000, where with the D33 you might as well switch to your phone once you're forced to ISO 800. It also became apparent that the RAW files were much more receptive to editing. Despite all coming in severely underexposed (the LCD is a huge liar on this thing) and at a high ISO to begin with, they've come out surprisingly well.

This thing is making me feel like a noob again. I've had to consult the manual for simple things like how to take a long exposure or set a timer. Hopefully more experience with it will bring better results.

Great photos great write up. I like the dark stairwell photo the best--so inviting. Looks like a cool spot.

I think you did quite well with your new camera and lens. Love the old intercom system on the wall #4 and the lighting in 9. Hope you get to go again soon

Those look great for such a high ISO. My screen also shows stuff way brighter so all my shots end up underexposed by a full stop.
