All they were trying to do is lessen the angle of the curve so they didn't run out of medical care.
Spread the same case load across a boarder time span.
You don't have a choice between money and not getting infected in a pandemic with a highly infectious pathogen like this one.
However the more damage to the infrastructure and economy, the more will needlessly suffer and die.
You can take that to the bank...

That's a flat out falsehood.
Without containment and/or an effective vaccine you can't limit the the number of cases.
This is simple stone cold logic.
